PSV still the best option for Kees Smit, but a longer stay in Alkmaar is on the horizon: “Talks ongoing”
1 min readWhere is his future really right now? Top talent Kees Smit, who has been showing too little for a whole season now, is said to be in the clear interest of numerous European top clubs, but what about that stopover then? The in fact necessary intermediate step in the Eredivisie.
Feyenoord but Ajax for sure—can we basically cross them off as a possible future employer, because both of the Randstad top clubs can’t immediately afford either the transfer fee or Smit’s salary. PSV seems to be the only remaining option, but then again, AZ from Alkmaar, as is customary, does not wish to cooperate with that. And so, at the moment, a longer stay in Alkmaar seems to be the only real option.
What does the main character actually think about his future? Smit is meanwhile considering a longer stay at AZ. Is that because AZ doesn't want to sell to PSV? The midfielder for the Alkmaar side reveals in an extensive interview that there have been talks between his camp and AZ about this. Smit isn't negative about a longer stay, he says.
"Sometimes I think: that’s enough now, although I don’t really have much trouble with it, you know", Smit says in conversation with Rodi Media about all the opinions and criticisms he receives. "I don’t read or hear everything. It certainly doesn’t keep me constantly busy. I’m too down-to-earth for that."

Smit clearly has in mind where he would like to go, but a longer stay at AZ is certainly not out of the question. "Spain would suit me well. But I don't know if that will happen. I'm in doubt. Maybe I should stay at AZ for another year? There are talks going on. Max and my agent discussed it recently. I said that I’m thinking about it. Of course, I talk about it with my parents, friends, my agent and Leeroy. I want to play a lot next season. That’s possible at AZ anyway. Although there are other factors. For example, I could get injured. In any case, I’m not negative about playing another year at AZ."
Although Smit is thinking about a longer stay in Alkmaar, he sometimes thinks about going abroad. "Sometimes I ask Chávez what a Dutch word is in Spanish. I’m not taking Spanish lessons or anything. My English is okay. With that, I can manage well enough anyway."
In any case, it seems PSV is the best next destination for Smit, despite the fact that AZ isn't keen on it. National coach Ronald Koeman at least has Smit on his radar. On Wednesday 27 May, Koeman will announce his final squad for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Bro, he said he wants to play a lot next season. That is exactly why PSV makes sense, we need that control in midfield and can protect his development. If AZ can offer guarantees too, then this becomes hard... but im still hoping PSV makes it happen, 🔥🐐.
"Er zijn gesprekken gaande" sounds like AZ trying to lock him down, and i get it. But at the same time he says PSV seems to be the best destination, so why would he not push the deal? One more season at AZ might actually turn him into a safe value, not a PSV-star.
I think PSV is still the best option for Smit, but the money argument is real. If AZ is willing to keep him one more year, PSV could be priced out again. Also, "Ik wil volgend seizoen veel spelen" sounds like AZ is offering exactly that.
If PSV really is the best option, then AZ saying no makes it feel like we are stuck watching Kees Smit move one step at a time. But tbh if he wants minutes, staying at AZ is the safest choice for him. Still, PSV should be ready to strike if those talks stall.
