PSV fans may miss Johan Cruyff Shield match

On Sunday August 2, PSV kicks off the 2026/2027 season with the Johan Cruijff Shield match against the Cup winner AZ. This is exactly two weeks after the World Cup final on Sunday July 19, and the World Cup can possibly ensure that some PSV players are not able to prepare optimally for the new season.

When they are eliminated from the global final tournament, the PSV players who are active at the World Cup are given three weeks off from coach Peter Bosz. This is what the coach says in an interview with De Telegraaf.

Because of this, according to the national newspaper, maybe as many as ten selected players will miss the season opener, but Bosz is pretty relaxed. ''I hope many guys are missing, because that means they may have played a final,'' the coach tells the newspaper.

Besides, according to Bosz, not every player needs three weeks off. ''Is three weeks away necessary? That differs from player to player. Some are already longing for football after a week. But we try to stick to those three weeks holiday,'' the born Apeldoorner continues.

Bosz also says that he will be following the World Cup and, for the most part, from Curaçao. ''I find it more interesting than fun. Maybe there will be a surprise among those players, maybe even for PSV. I’m going to follow the World Cup, but for a match involving Uganda I’m not setting my alarm clock'', Bosz said.
