Leading PSV players want to thwart Ajax: “I’ll put on an FC Twente scarf.”

A special final matchday in the Eredivisie is now on the way. Just like last season, the last matchday for Ajax will determine how the season will end for the Amsterdam clubs.

Where last year first place was visible one or two times, now third, fourth or fifth is the maximum achievable for the beleaguered club from Amsterdam. With PSV - FC Twente on the agenda, there are many PSV fans who know exactly what to do with the last home match for PSV.

That also applies to the two PSV icons Willy and René van de Kerkhof. They publicly come out for it. The PSV icons are cheering on Sunday for FC Twente during the head-to-head meeting at the Philips Stadium. The Twente side can secure third place in the Eredivisie at the expense of, among others, Ajax—and that suits the brothers just fine.

Willy and René assume that a large part of the stadium is behind FC Twente. "And rightly so", René says in the Willy and René Podcast by Omroep Brabant. "We just got an FC Twente scarf, so we’ll just wear that."

Her brother Willy gives it especially to FC Twente. "We started there and grew up there. So we wholeheartedly wish FC Twente the third place", he explains. For René, antipathy toward Ajax does play a role and so he cheers for the men from Twente on Sunday.

"I jumped for joy in the air just yesterday when I saw on my phone that it was 1-2 for Ajax. I shouted: 'Yes!' My wife asked what was going on and I said that Ajax was behind. Then she said I shouldn't act so weird, but I just think that's fun."

Willy looks at it a bit differently. "It’s nice if Ajax has to play in the play-offs, but if you’re really honest then you still have to ask yourself: damn it, how is it that Ajax has slipped so far? I really hope that Jordi Cruijff manages to ensure that they give PSV more resistance again next year." René doesn’t really count on that for the time being. "Normally it takes two or three years before you have a team that’s challenging for the trophies again."

Willy saying he wants Twente to get third is a nice touch, family roots and all that. But honestly, I am more curious about what Cruijff can fix for Ajax. If it takes them two or three years again, PSV better be ready to push hard.

René getting excited about the 1-2 at Ajax is so relatable. It is petty, but honestly it is also football karma, especially with how Ajax has dropped this season.

I get the motivation, but I still want PSV to focus on our own business. Oranje-level chaos for Ajax is fun, but I'd rather see us control the last day without relying on other teams to do favors.

Love this. Willy and René wanting FC Twente to take the points at Ajax is peak PSV energy, especially with that Twente scarf joke. If Ajax are forced into playoffs it feels like justice.

Pretty funny, but I do get the point. René cheering because Ajax might drop behind is understandable, though I hope it does not turn into us hoping for chaos instead of focusing on our own game. Twente at home could be risky if the crowd is too loud for them.

I love the Van de Kerkhof brothers going full chaos for last day. If Ajax slip into the play-offs, that is at least some proper payback for the season they had. Also the "FC Twente-sjaaltje" line is pure PSV energy.

I love that Willy and René are just admitting it, FC Twente scarf on and help Ajax mess up. If it means Ajax ends up in playoffs, that is a win for PSV fans even if we are not playing them.
