Former PSV player certain about Oranje: “With this generation, I don’t have that much [expectations]”
1 min readFormer PSV player and nowadays analyst René van der Gijp is enjoying the 2026 World Cup in North America, but in doing so he points primarily to other participating countries. With the current Netherlands squad, Van der Gijp has very little.
This tells the current analyst in Vandaag Inside Oranje. ''I just don’t know how it comes about; I’m also getting a generation older. I don’t really have much to do with the Netherlands national team,'' says Gijp.
After that, the former footballer comes with an explanation of why he feels little affinity with the current Oranje. ''I started with Cruijff and Van Hanegem'', the analyst begins, who himself played fifteen internationals.
''Then I came myself and after that came Kluivert, the De Boer brothers, Richard Witschge, Rob Witschge, Aron Winter and Edwin van der Sar. After that we had Sneijder, Van Bronckhorst and name them all. But with this generation I haven't got so much'', says Gijp with conviction.

According to the former PSV player, there isn't much in the current Oranje. ''I think all those top players are great to watch, but the Netherlands national team, I just don't know. There's nothing there. Whether it was Robben, Van Persie, or whoever, those were personalities'', said Van der Gijp.

Van der Gijp vindt het niks omdat er geen "persoonlijkheden" zijn, maar imo juist die mentale drive zie ik wel. Bij PSV zijn we ook opgegroeid met jonge honden, die moeten vaak eerst ritme krijgen.
Broer, hij kijkt gewoon met nostalgiebril... 🤡 Waarom zou een ploeg met potentie "niets" zijn? 👀
tbh ik snap zijn gevoel een beetje, hij groeide op met de echte leiders. Maar dat hij zegt "Er zit niets in" vind ik echt kort door de bocht. Tops in de selectie is tops in de selectie, of het nu namen zijn van vroeger of nu.
Man wat onzin zeg. Van der Gijp zegt "Met deze generatie heb ik niet zoveel", maar kijken we naar de kern, daar zit juist balans en tactische discipline. IMO is Oranje niet ineens leeg, alleen het type voetbal is anders dan Cruijff/Van Hanegem tijd.
"Met deze generatie heb ik niet zoveel" ja oke, maar kijk dan naar de speelstijl en pressing. Oranje wordt toch vooral gebouwd via types als Xavi Simons en talenten die durven. Dit is meer nostalgie dan analyse 💯
Tbh Van der Gijp klinkt alsof hij alleen kijkt naar namen i.p.v. naar spel. Cruijff en Van Hanegem zijn geweldig, maar "er zit niets in" is gewoon te kort door de bocht.
