Fans incredulous during World Cup match featuring Paul Wanner: ‘What are we even watching?’

Paul Wanner was in the starting lineup last Monday evening in the World Cup match between Austria and the reigning world champions Argentina. Despite a good performance from the Austrians, Argentina ultimately proved too strong, thanks to Lionel Messi, winning 2-0.

Wanner played for 68 minutes himself, after which the PSV midfielder was replaced by Marko Arnautovic. After the match, teammate Konrad Laimer was very critical of the referee on duty.

Even on social media, football fans expressed their disbelief during the match about the level of the referee in Argentina - Austria. A selection of reactions on the social platform X:
