Johan Derksen lashes out at former PSV player: 'His body language reveals that he still considers himself a star'
1 min readDespite a stuttering season with his fitness, former PSV player Memphis Depay is still part of the Netherlands squad for the World Cup. Memphis came on as a substitute in the matches against Japan (2-2) and Sweden (5-1), but made anything but a good impression.
For Johan Derksen, this is reason to conclude that the international career of the all-time top scorer for Oranje is almost certainly over. Derksen says this in his podcast Groeten uit Grolloo.
''Due to the euphoria surrounding the Dutch national team, we must conclude - and that gets a bit buried - that the international career of our pseudo-star player Memphis Depay is over'', De Snor kicks off in the podcast.
According to Derksen, Memphis should therefore no longer be part of the Netherlands national team either. “After two substitute appearances, we can already say that he lacks the level to continue being part of Oranje. He plays in South America (in Brazil, at Corinthians, red.) and we have absolutely no idea how he’s doing there. His body language shows that he still thinks of himself as a star, but that’s all based on past achievements. It’s been a very long time, actually, that Memphis was a decisive player,” continues the analyst.
Also Henk Kuipers, a podcast fellow of the bearded analyst, believes that the story is over for Memphis in Oranje. ''We apparently aren’t allowed to be critical of him, because he has a skin color. But you can’t be critical, because then you somehow become a kind of hater. But he no longer dents a pack of butter, he is also not a mood-setter - yes, maybe negative - but he is still included,'' said Kuipers.
Then Derksen brings up that Memphis has been important in the past, given the number of goals he scored for Oranje. He has somehow been declared almost sacred. He’s the super celebrity, but on what basis? He once scored a lot for Oranje. But that was years ago by now,'' says the bearded analyst.
That, Kuipers responds to again. ''And also to countries that don't have that much to do with it. The real football coach can see that he is on his way out'', concludes the former captain of the motorcycle gang No Surrender.

"Zijn lichaamstaal verraadt dat hij zichzelf wel nog een vedette vindt" is wel echt zo'n zin die je daarna overal terugziet. Maar goed, als je als ploeg hem niet beter laat aansluiten, dan gaat die 'vedette' vibe ook alleen maar erger overkomen.
Na die twee invalbeurten kan je wel iets zeggen, maar dit is ook meteen een oordeel over zijn hele internationale loopbaan. Voor mij voelt het als: succes in het verleden afstrepen terwijl zijn rol nu gewoon anders is. Jongere types lopen voorop, dat is het echte verhaal.
🔥 Verbaasd dat hij nog steeds "vedette" genoemd wordt. Maar als hij in Brazilië niet zichtbaar is, dan is het toch logisch dat kritiek komt.
Derksen is natuurlijk weer lekker aan het strooien met woorden, maar tbh die invallen tegen Japan en Zweden zeiden wel iets. Als Memphis geen sfeer maakt en ook geen dreiging brengt, dan snapt ieders frustratie.
"pseudo-sterspeler" echt bruut gekozen woorden. Kuipers heeft ook een punt over sfeerbepaler, hij is niet meer die vliegende wide/10 die Oranje ontplofte. Toch denk ik dat ze hem selecteren voor tempo en ervaring, niet omdat hij nu peak is.
Die lichaamstaal quote van Derksen is zo typisch: je ziet een beweging en hij verklaart meteen het einde verhaal. Ik vond Memphis tegen Japan en Zweden niet dramatisch, maar ook niet alsof hij de boel draagt. Misschien is het vooral foutschoot-positie en rolverwachting.
tbh die "bijna voorbij" vibe snap ik wel, maar Derksen gaat weer lekker op karakter. Memphis viel in en ja, het oogt niet als 100% rendement. Maar meteen afscheid van Oranje lijkt me nu ook weer overdreven.
