Scandinavian media make fun of it

1 min read

In Sweden and the surrounding countries, the defeat of the Swedish national team has hit hard. Just as in Belgium they don't lose sleep over it but rather inflate and cheer on defeats and/or points dropped by the Dutch national team, there is also room for that in Scandinavia.

Especially after the 5-1 defeat that the Swedish national team suffered on Saturday evening in the USA. In European media, people are lyrical about the Netherlands national team after the 5-1 win over Sweden. Danish, Norwegian and Finnish media mostly make fun of the performance of neighbouring country Sweden against the Netherlands.

In Denmark, Norway and Finland, all neighbours of Sweden, people have a lot to say about Sweden's performance against the Netherlands. 'The Netherlands gave Sweden a little footballing lesson', wrote the Danish Bold. 'The players seemed drunk', said Norway's VG. The Norwegian coach Kjetil Rekdal also came out swinging. 'Probably we need to send support staff to escort the Swedish players to the dressing room, because they look dizzy.'

In England, Spain, France, Italy and Germany, a lot of attention is also being paid to Oranje's sweep against Sweden. 'A brilliant Brobbey puts Gyökeres and Isak in the shade and challenges the critics in the Netherlands,' the verdict goes. 'The Dutch are playing in an ultra-fluorescent shade of orange, and there is a sense that this might be the last chance for part of this generation to shine in a tournament and bring the country closer to the holy grail,' writes the Daily Mail.

Marca writes: 'If there could have been any doubts, then those are now gone', says the Spanish outlet. 'The Netherlands won, crushing and convincing against Sweden on a spectacular afternoon thanks to Gakpo and Brobbey, and thanks to a brilliant performance by Dumfries, the recent, even if not yet official, acquisition by Real Madrid, with two assists.'

'Houston is completely dominated by the Netherlands!', begins German BILD. 'The Dutch made short work of Sweden. The standout players: former Leipzig player Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo from Liverpool.'

'Netherlands delivered an attacking masterclass against Sweden', according to the French L'Equipe. 'Netherlands left no room for doubt. Netherlands was especially strong in attack, in a match where all Dutch attackers excelled, with the exception of Donyell Malen, who was substituted at halftime.'

Italian newspaper La Gazetta dello Sport saw the Dutch national team shine: 'It seems that even the dignitaries had to bow at the end of the match. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima watched Van Dijk and his team sweep aside Sweden 5-1 with cannon shots, and applauded amusedly while they handed out handshakes and tulips.'

"HOUSTON is completely dominated by the Netherlands!" from BILD is hilarious because they always shout everything. Still, Koeman letting the attack swarm and Brobbey's impact is the real story, not the clowning.

"The players seemed drunk" and Rekdal needing support staff to escort them to the changing room... ngl thats funny, but 5-1 usually shuts everyone up. Also Kops and tulips? La Gazetta is wild 😂

L'Equipe saying "all Dutch forwards excelled, except Malen" is fair, but i think PSV fans are used to rotations. Still, Dumfries with 2 assists getting dragged into Real Madrid talk is peak media hype.

tbh this "dutch gave sweden a football lesson" narrative is exactly the kind of energy i like. if brobbey and gakpo are on, PSV-style pressing and directness feels unavoidable 🔥⚽
