Analysts point to Obispo and Curaçao: “Come on, guys”

1 min read

No one will have missed that the Curaçao of head coach Dick Advocaat, with PSV player Armando Obispo in the squad, made his debut at the World Cup last weekend. Despite a 1-1 scoreline, Advocaat's men ultimately suffered a 7-1 defeat against powerhouse Germany.

It may certainly be called a miracle that The Blue Wave is active at the World Cup despite the fact that host countries Canada, Mexico and the United States had qualified directly. At ESPN, however, it is believed that 48 participating countries is a bit too much of the good thing.

According to Ali Boussaboun, the World Cup is therefore also too high a hurdle for Curaçao. ''With all due respect, I'm super happy for them. But the World Cup is a few sizes too big for Curaçao'', Boussaboun said on the ESPN program WK Praat.

Former PSV player Arnold Bruggink can relate to the words of his colleague. ''I'm an enormous football fan. There's nothing more fun than gearing up for the World Cup and doing something a bit different now and then. But there are now too many teams where I truly miss the technical skills. This is a stage where you should perform. It's great that everyone is allowed to take part, but come on, boys,'' says Bruggink.

Marciano Vink believes it is also not entirely appropriate to compare Cape Verde, which this week managed to surprise with a 0-0 draw against Spain, alongside Curaçao. ''Cape Verde has been much further ahead for years. And I really think it’s a shame that Curaçao approached this match in this way. There were guests who really love to show themselves off, but then you go at them hard. It could just as well have gone like Cape Verde, with knife between the teeth'', said Vink.
