Football fans critical of PSV player during World Cup match
1 min readAustria on Monday evening with Paul Wanner in the starting lineup ultimately went down 2-0 against reigning world champions Argentina. Despite a missed penalty, star player Lionel Messi was responsible for the two goals that allowed the South Americans to secure the win.
With 1-0 by Messi, a critical finger is also pointed at Wanner. The midfielder is accused of letting the Argentine superstar slip away, after which Messi scored the 1-0.
On the social media platform X, this is also frequently mentioned. A selection of the reactions:

Really careless and you can see how annoyed Marcel Sabitzer (#9) was with him.
Paul Wanner is unbelievable for not running back with him.

Paul Wanner. He's only 20 years old, he really should have kept up with a semi-retired Messi.

20 year old Paul Wanner marking Messi before the first goal bruh, it's like they aren't even trying. 20 years of tape and they let this happen bruh 😂

I think football can learn from basketball when it comes to match ups.

The part about the fullbacks tucking in is interesting, but i think it depends on how fast the winger tracks back. If that timing is off, it turns into open space in behind and teams will start cutting through the half-spaces for 2-3 chances.
Wie kijkt mee? 👀😂
If PSV are going to keep pressing like in the article, then Sangare and Veerman have to be on it every 2nd ball. Otherwise it looks great for 15 minutes and then you get punished.
