Maduro points to former PSV player
1 min readSo far, it hasn’t been the World Cup for former PSV striker Donyell Malen. Despite a strong half-season at AS Roma, the striker has not yet been on target at the World Cup with Oranje.
Against Sweden and Tunisia, Brian Brobbey was moreover preferred in the striker position, which meant the former PSV player had to move out to the right wing. Brobbey, on the other hand, did prove his worth there with two goals against Sweden (5-1) and a goal against Tunisia (1-3).
Nevertheless, former footballer Hedwiges Maduro, with Orange active at the 2006 World Cup, believes that national team coach Ronald Koeman can play Malen as a striker better against absolute top teams than with Brobbey. The former midfielder says this in Studio Oranje of VoetbalPrimeur.
''Is playing De Malen against top teams the right choice up front? Maybe it is, because then you end up playing more on the transition'', Maduro begins.
Nevertheless, the current analyst believes that at this moment there is no reason to take Brobbey out of the starting lineup. ''At AS Roma he is already basically like that, even though Brobbey is also fast. Malen goes even faster when going deep. On the other hand: if Brobbey keeps developing like this, you also want to keep giving him his trust. There is actually no reason to take him out,'' Maduro said.

Tbh het gaat niet alleen om tempo, het gaat ook om timing en combinatievoetbal. Brobbey bewees waarde als spits, Malen als alternatief lijkt vooral theoretisch tot je ziet hoe ze elkaar vinden. No cap, vertrouwen is hier inderdaad het sleutelwoord.
Hedwiges Maduro heeft wel een punt over het omschakelen. Maar "er is eigenlijk geen reden om hem eruit te halen" vind ik te stellig. Als Malen echt die snelheid voor diep kan brengen, dan verdient hij tenminste een start in één van die wedstrijden om te vergelijken. 💯⚽

i get the "toplanden" argument, maar imo Koeman moet gewoon kiezen op wie het meest dreigt in de diepte EN kan terug verdedigen. Brobbey scoort ook, dus als Malen nog niet prikt, geef je die rol niet zomaar weg. 👀
Maduro zegt "Malen gaat nog sneller diep" en ik snap de logica, maar tegen Zweden en Tunesie zag je ook hoe Brobbey rende met de ruimte. Als Koeman het tempo en de omschakeling wil houden, is Brobbey gewoon een veilige basiskeuze. 🔥🐐
"Malen gaat nog sneller diep" klinkt gevaarlijk voor die verdedigingen. Maar als Koeman hem als rechtsbuiten gebruikt, mist Brobbey toch net de directe dreiging in de zestien.
