With their heads held high, home: “They did great.”
1 min readFor former PSV coach Dick Advocaat, the 2026 World Cup with Curaçao is over. The Blue Wave lost Thursday evening 0-2 to Ivory Coast and can therefore pack the bags.
For the island, this was the very first World Cup ever, and against Germany they managed to surprise friend and foe by scoring a goal. Nonetheless, the class gap against Die Mannschaft was more than evident, and the Germans ultimately won 7-1.
In the second match, the men of Advocaat managed to draw 0-0 against Ecuador thanks to an outstanding performance by Eloy Room. After a 0-2 defeat against Ivory Coast, the World Cup is definitively over.
Despite this, Advocaat's selection goes home with their heads held high. "If you see how we played the whole tournament, then that deserves nothing but compliments. They did great. It was a great tournament, especially for the boys who played. The boys who didn't play are a bit disappointed. That's unfortunate, but you also have to deal with that," the former coach of PSV tells NOS.

After that, the coach discusses the opponents of Obispo and company at the World Cup. ''Ecuador and Ivory Coast are truly world-class teams. We simply offered them resistance and also put something offensive up against them. I think that deserves praise,'' said Advocaat.

"high press and direct" sounds nice, but vs teams that punish transitions it can get ugly fast. That said, if the front three keep winning duels, we can play this way. W
Wie kijkt mee? 😂
I dont buy the idea that the defensive setup was the problem. The fullbacks were too high, that left lanes for counters. Need more control in build-up, not just running harder. 🔥
If PSV really went for that high press in the article, fair play. But i swear once the first ball gets skipped, their midfield looks shaky. 👀
Watching the quoted minutes, i noticed how often we lose the second ball after set pieces. It feels like we are working on possession but not the chaos moments, kinda frustrating 💀
I think the biggest issue is the timing of the switch. We hold the ball one pass too long and then everything becomes predictable. Still, some of those combinations looked like a banger ⚽
That midfield balance looked off... If the fullback tucks in too early, the wing gets exposed and you can feel the danger coming 🔥
"Inside PSV" vibes but tbh i want to see more pressing triggers from the front. If the 8 is not stepping in, our midfield becomes a spectator.
If the plan is to keep winning duels and play through the half-spaces, i can buy that. But if our build-up is slow again, Feyenoord fans will have a field day with those counters.
