This season, PSV last lost the Light City derby

For PSV, Tuesday evening features the traditional Light City derby against FC Eindhoven on the calendar. At 8 p.m., Peter Bosz’s team kicks off at the home Philips Stadium against the blue-whites of Aalsterweg.

In 2022, the match was played again for the first time since 2016 and PSV, under the leadership of Ruud van Nistelrooij, won 5-0. In 2015, the fixture was played for the first time in a long time at the Philips Stadium, while in the years before the Jan Louwers Stadium was repeatedly the backdrop for the Lichtstad derby.

Under Peter Bosz, PSV won the match for the Lichtstad Cup the previous three times. In 2023/2024 it finished 3-1, and in the past two seasons the final score was decided at 3-2 in PSV’s favor.

In the 2016/2017 season, PSV surprisingly lost the match 0-1 at their home Philips Stadium. After a 0-0 halftime score, it was ultimately Mart Lieder who, on behalf of FC Eindhoven, managed to produce the only goal of the match and thereby ensured that the Lichtstad Cup went to the Aalsterweg.

This was not the first time this century that FC Eindhoven came out on top. In the run-up to the 2012/2013 season, PSV's little brother in Eindhoven, at home, managed to go through with the win after a penalty shootout.

Just like in 2016/2017, this match was for PSV the final dress rehearsal for the Johan Cruyff Shield against the then Cup winner Feyenoord. In the end, under the leadership of Phillip Cocu, PSV won the first trophy of the season after a 0-1 victory over the Rotterdam side.
