Former PSV player struck while on the run with two Eredivisie clubs: “They weren’t happy with me”
1 min readAfter ending his professional career in 1994, former PSV player Wim Kieft went to work as an analyst for various sports broadcasters. Nowadays, Kieft is a permanent analyst for Ziggo Sport and, for the past few months, the former striker has also returned as a co-commentator for that broadcaster.
Kieft was in the past often a co-commentator for CanalPlus and Sport1, the predecessor of Ziggo Sport. In his career as a co-commentator, Kieft had to run for his life at two Eredivisie clubs.
This tells the former international in the podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp. ''I was really scared once, at FC Twente. Back then, in my naivety, I walked from one side to the area where the supporters were. Then I was on my phone to give myself a bit of confidence. Only then I forgot that I was sitting underneath the section of the hard core at FC Twente: Section P, that's what it's called'', Kieft says in the podcast.
Then the hard core of the Tukkers wanted to deal with the born Amsterdammer physically as well. ''They chased me back then and then I had to run. They tried to pull me into a space. They weren’t happy with me. In the end I ran to the fence and in a fraction of a second I thought the fence was closed, but luckily the gate was open,'' the former PSV player still recalls.

Even at FC Utrecht, Kieft once had to flee, but an old acquaintance of the former striker came to the rescue. ''I was chased too. Then that former footballer who is now a police officer came to save me. Ton de Kruik. He said, boys, stop. And they did stop then as well,'' Kieft said.

This is exactly why i get nervous when we play too narrow. We need that width to unlock teams, otherwise Gakpo ends up receiving with his back to goal. Still, credit to the defensive work today, it kept it from getting ugly 😅💯
Wie kijkt mee? Lol. But seriously, if they want the same intensity every match, the bench has to deliver too. Otherwise late-game the legs go and it turns into defending for dear life. 🤬
If PSV really went with that midfield shape, i feel it limited the buildup. Sangare always looks one pass away but when the spacing is off, it turns into sideways football. Im curious if the next match he starts earlier on the ball.
That tactical bit about the rotations was interesting, but i think it depends on the opponent. If the rival sits deep, we need width and quick combinations, not just fancy movement. Otherwise it becomes mid. 💀
Liking the idea of switching the fullbacks higher, but the risk is obvious. If Tillman or Veerman slow the tempo by a second, the counter chances are there. PSV cant afford cheap turnovers, ngl. 🙄
"we need more control in the final third" is spot on. On the break we still look a bit panicked, like we forget the runner and just smash it. Imo the next step is sharper decision making from the wingers. 🔥
If PSV are really going to press like the article suggests, i hope we keep our shape behind it. Veerman has to pick the right passes otherwise it turns into chaos in midfield. 👀
