Koeman gives explanation for selecting Til: ‘Someone who also brings something else’

After a strong season in which Guus Til was responsible for fourteen goals and five assists in 29 Eredivisie matches, the attacking midfielder may now gear up with Oranje for the 2026 World Cup. This season, Til made his name at PSV primarily as a substitute striker, and he is the only PSV player who will travel with the Netherlands to the World Cup.

With that, Til makes his return after almost two years. The last time the midfielder was in Koeman's squad dates back to October 2024 for the Nations League matches against Hungary and Germany.

At Wednesday afternoon’s press conference, Koeman explained his selection, and the name of Guus Til was also brought up. The national coach was asked by a journalist why he will call on the PSV player during the World Cup.

''Because of his performance at his club, his fitness, the type of player. Someone who also brings something else than other number 10s'', Koeman begins his reply, quoted by Voetbal International.

Koeman nevertheless had to think carefully about whether or not to select the PSV player, who, according to the national coach, will not be eligible for the striker position. ''I wasn't yet definitively decided about it, but I had already had a good feeling about it for longer. I don't see him as a striker, in the first place. More as a 10, behind the striker,'' said Koeman.
