Former PSV defender returns to his youth love PEC Zwolle
1 min readFrom 1996 to 1998, Jaap Stam played for PSV, after which the hard-nosed defender made the move to Manchester United. In 2007, Stam ended his career at Ajax, after which the Rock of Kampen took up a job as a youth coach and analyst.
Stam now works as a permanent analyst for streaming service Viaplay, where the former defender provides analysis of the matches from the English Premier League. Now the former international returns to PEC Zwolle, the club where he began his professional career.
The Rock of Kampen will have PEC Zwolle focus on technical matters within the club from the capital of Overijssel. Stam has been appointed as the successor to Jeroen Bijl.
The defender is at least excited about this collaboration. ''I would really like to make my contribution to the further professionalization of PEC Zwolle. This club has run like a common thread through my life. In my role on the board, I want to build a sustainable club together'', Stam says on the PEC Zwolle club website.
According to Stam, the people of Zwolle can grow into a sustainable club, although a lot still needs to be done for that. ''PEC Zwolle has a lot of potential and can grow in many areas, but this does require time. We need to be realistic and stay level-headed, but at the same time also have the ambition to move the club forward. With my experience and network, I hope to make a contribution to that,'' said Stam.

Krijg wel flashbacks aan 96-98, die Stam bij PSV was echt een muur. Maar ik snap ook dat hij nu in een bestuur rol wil bouwen, en PEC heeft potentie, ze moeten alleen tempo maken in jeugd en scouting. Als Jeroen Bijl vertrek was, wie vult die technische gaten dan? 👀
PEC heeft potentie, Stam heeft netwerk, prima. Maar als ze na een paar maanden weer terugvallen op 'aspiraties', dan is dit gewoon lippendienst. Techniek verbeteren is oké, maar voetbal is ook tempo, organisatie en discipline. 🤡⚽
Eens kijken wat hij bij PEC Zwolle echt kan veranderen. Technische zaken binnen de club klinkt mooi, maar je moet het ook terugzien op het veld, anders is het allemaal praat. Ik ben benieuwd hoe ze die "duurzame club" gedachte gaan vertalen naar spelersontwikkeling.
Stam als opvolger van Jeroen Bijl, focussen op technische zaken, ok. Maar PEC moet ook een voetbalplan hebben dat werkt op zaterdag, niet alleen professionalisering. Als ze tijd nodig hebben, prima, maar dan wel groei laten zien, anders wordt het weer hetzelfde verhaal.
Jaap Stam bij PEC... wauw, maar ook wel logisch. Ik vraag me alleen af hoe hij die technische focus precies gaat aanpakken, want Zwolle heeft al moeite met consistentie in de jeugd. Toch respect, "rode draad" of niet, resultaat moet volgen.
Jaap Stam bij PEC klopt wel, maar ik vind het grappig hoe 'de rots van kampen' nu ineens aan de technische kant zit. Benieuwd of hij daar ook echt structure gaat neerzetten of vooral praat. Voor Zwolle zou het wel eens een mooie boost kunnen zijn.
Jaap Stam als analist bij Viaplay vond ik altijd lekker nuchter in zijn oordeel, dus logisch dat hij nu bij PEC iets moet opbouwen. Alleen wel grappig hoe "Rots van Kampen" weer in Zwolle gaat focussen op techniek, tegenover pure defensieve hardheid bij ons vroeger 😂
"rode draad door mijn leven"... snap ik, maar tbh ik had ook gewoon een Stam terug bij PSV willen zien als voetbalinhoudelijk brein. Toch goed voor PEC, zeker met zijn netwerk en die nuchtere ambitie.
Jaap Stam bij PEC Zwolle vind ik echt een slimme zet, die weet hoe het er in topvoetbal aan toegaat. Alleen ben ik benieuwd of hij vooral technisch gaat helpen of ook echt keuzes gaat beïnvloeden, want Bijl was ook niet voor niks. 🐐
