1 min readLast month, former PSV player Arjen Robben, during a youth match for FC Groningen O14, got into a dispute with Today Inside presenter Wilfred Genee when Robben was arguing with the referee on duty. When Genee stepped in to get the story from the youth coach, the presenter was pushed aside by the former winger.
Last week, yet again, footage emerged of a fanatical Robben along the touchline during a youth tournament in Germany. The 96-time international got into an heated argument with the referee, for which he was shown a yellow card, and these images were also assessed on Vandaag Inside.
Johan Derksen and Wilfred Genee are astonished when they see the footage of Robben. “Apparently it’s structural. Now he was yelling at a referee again while there was absolutely no crowd, but if this is an example for the youth, then he can never forbid the youth again to swear and rant at the referee,” said Derksen.
Therefore, the bearded analyst is of the opinion that FC Groningen should speak with the former PSV player about his behavior as a coach. ''As a youth coach, you must primarily be a good educator. He has a wealth of experience, but he can’t deal with children at all. FC Groningen must intervene here once'', continues De Snor.
Genee is also surprised by the images and looks back on the earlier incident in which the presenter was involved. “The strangest thing—and that was my amazement at what happened about a month ago—is that he does it twice, for half an hour, that he walks into the field and just keeps going. Where I think: 'what is this about?'”, the presenter said.
Johan Derksen also thinks that Robben’s behavior encourages the youth to take the same approach and go after referees. ''FC Groningen still has to find out at some point that he, especially with young players, does not set a good example. The players misbehave on the pitch all the time, but he even invites them to do so,'' concludes Derksen.

Die jeugdwedstrijd beelden zijn echt pijnlijk om te zien. als het "structureel" is zoals Derksen zegt, dan moet FC Groningen dit meteen aanpakken, niet wachten tot het weer escaleert. walgelijk dat hij kinderen blijkbaar meesleept in dat gekrijs.
tbh dit gaat echt te ver. Arjen of niet, zo met scheids praten bij O14 is gewoon slecht voorbeeld en dan is die "pedagoog" opmerking van Derksen niet eens overdreven 🔥
"Het is blijkbaar structureel." Yeah, that line is spot on. Twice in a month and then still invading the field... that is more than emotion, that is a habit. He should focus on being a pedagoog, not a hothead. 👀
Derksen has a point. If he is coach and still screaming at the referee when there is no crowd, that is basically permission for the kids to copy the behaviour. FC Groningen should handle this properly, for once. 🔥
This is just embarrassing tbh. You can be passionate, but pushing past the refs and then doing it again is not how you teach young kids. If Robben wants respect, start with respect for the referee and the kids too.
tbh, ik vind het echt geen look als je zo staat te roepen bij een scheids, zelfs niet met voetbal-woede. maar van Derksen roepen dat de jeugd dan nooit meer mag mopperen... snap die nuance niet helemaal. Robben moet als coach gewoon normaal blijven, klaar.
