Orange selection known | Of course Guus Til will go to the World Cup

1 min read

National team coach Ronald Koeman has put an end to all uncertainty and announced the Netherlands squad for the 2026 World Cup. Guus Til has been selected by the head coach as the only PSV player for the global finals.

Til was the only PSV player still having a chance of a spot in the World Cup squad, since captain Jerdy Schouten will have to miss the World Cup due to a serious ACL injury and Joey Veerman has said he no longer needs to be called by Koeman after Koeman criticized the midfielder’s character. In addition, the past few weeks have largely been about whether Guus Til should or should not go, because of the season the attacking midfielder has had this season at PSV.

Til made a name for himself this season primarily as a substitute striker because the real strikers Plea and Pepi were mainly plagued by injuries. Til scored fourteen goals in 29 league matches this season and also provided five assists, which sparked the debate in the Netherlands about whether the PSV player should go to the World Cup.

In the end, the national team coach spoke and rightly expressed his confidence in Til. This, among other things, comes at the expense of AZ player Kees Smit and Feyenoord’s Luciano Valente, both of whom, logically, have been dropped and therefore have not managed to convince the coach of a place in the World Cup squad.

In addition, there are a number of former PSV players who are part of Koeman's squad. Memphis Depay, Denzel Dumfries, Cody Gakpo, Donyell Malen and Noa Lang have also received an invitation.

At the World Cup, the Netherlands will actively be in Group F where the opponents will be Japan, Sweden and Tunisia. Below is the complete squad of the Netherlands national team.

Gakpo as the spark is fair, but i still think the 10 needs to get closer to receive between the lines. Otherwise it becomes too predictable, imo.

Eens. 🔥 We need the winger to attack the line, not just cut inside every time. That goal threat is there, play with more speed and less hesitation.

"We need more directness" okay, but then play smarter crosses too. Tilting everything to pace only works if the build-up is clean.

"PSV inside" makes it sound like everything is already clicking, but i still think the build-up is too predictable in the final third. 👀 Move the ball faster and get the fullbacks involved earlier, or teams will just sit and counter.

The part about the winger cutting inside is scary because it means they are inviting fullbacks to jump. If that happens again, the centre-backs better be on it. 🚀

That rotation talk is cap tbh. If the article is hinting we might change the front again, we risk losing the chemistry up top. One or two tweaks, sure, but dont blow up the balance.

If PSV really wants to press like in the article, i hope the midfield is protected, because one slip and its a counter-punch for the visitors. 👀

"PSV Inside" saying the press is the key... fair, but i saw too many moments where the first trigger was late. Defending as a unit looked decent, yet the second ball was always a gamble. 🤬

tbh if PSV keep playing like this in possession, the link between midfield and Donyell Malen has to be quicker. 👀 Otherwise you get the same problem, slow build-ups and easy counters.

"PSV Inside" better mention that X player has been doing the unsexy work, winning duels and stopping transitions. If the article doesnt tie that to why we look better defensively, its missing the point. 🔥

If PSV want to press higher, they need that midfield to stay connected. Otherwise it turns into free transitions for the opponent, and we all saw how that ends last season. Tbh, the intensity is there but the shape is the issue.

tbh im not convinced by the balance in that setup. When the fullback goes forward, too many times the space behind is open and we get punished on the counter. Not saying its doomed, but we need quicker recovery runs. 😅

If PSV are actually sticking with this pressing trigger, i think it could finally trap teams higher up. But lets see if the midfield cover is solid when the first pass gets played through. 👀⚽
