PSV winger speaks out about the future: “I don’t expect to stay there.”
1 min readWith the arrival of Nick Olij and Matej Kovar to PSV, the club’s management decided to loan goalkeeper Joël Drommel to Eredivisie club Sparta Rotterdam. Despite a poor start, Drommel grew over the course of the season into an important mainstay for the club from Rotterdam-West.
The goalkeeper joined PSV in the summer of 2021, but toward the end of the 2021/2022 season he landed on the bench under the then head coach Roger Schmidt. After the signing of Walter Benítez in the summer of 2022, Drommel became definitively the second choice and the goalkeeper was the cup goalkeeper under Ruud van Nistelrooy and Peter Bosz.
Last season, Drommel had a strong year, and the PSV loanee agrees with that as well in an interview with De Spartaan. ''This was one of the best seasons of my career. Eleven clean sheets is incredibly good, actually better than expected. My goal was ten clean sheets, and I think that’s quite a lot for a goalkeeper at Sparta'', the goalkeeper tells the club magazine of Sparta.
Drommel started off poorly, partly due to two mistakes in the first competitive match away at PSV (6-1), to his adventure with the Kasteelheren. ''I joined training camp in Delden with Sparta and made a bad showing in my first friendly match. After that, the last two weeks of the pre-season went pretty well, but I had a bad first competitive match against PSV. Fortunately, I managed to bounce back and was important for the team,'' says the goalkeeper.

Now the goalkeeper, who is still under contract with PSV for another year, expects that he will leave Eindhoven next summer. ''On paper I still have one year left on my contract with PSV, but I don't expect to stay there. That’s why I’m hoping to be able to make the move to a great league abroad. La Liga or Serie A does have my preference. But playing in Germany or England would also be very nice. In any case, it has to be a top league; that is the most important thing for my career,'' said Drommel.

"Ik verwacht niet dat ik daar ga blijven." Bro dit is toch een beetje voorspellen dat PSV hem moet verkopen of verhuren. Hoop dat ze niet te laat schakelen en gewoon een goede nummer 1 plannen.
Fair play voor Joël, die bounce-back na die 6-1 lijkt me huge geweest. Maar tbh als hij nu al zegt dat hij weg wil, dan vraag ik me af wat PSV in de komende zomer echt gaat doen met doelmanrotatie.
