Million-dollar investment | Is a step toward PSV still too early? “You just have to start working on that”
1 min readIn the past period, defenders Mats Rots and Ruud Nijstad of FC Twente have repeatedly been linked with a transfer to PSV. It would mean a multi-million investment for PSV, but of course it is not there yet.
The club management of PSV will be looking for reinforcements at the back this coming summer due to the injury of Jerdy Schouten and the possible departure of Anass Salah-Eddine and Sergino Dest.
The duo of FC Twente made a good impression this season and is therefore enjoying the necessary interest in the Netherlands. Under John van den Brom, the Tukkers managed to qualify for the Europa League play-off round despite a mediocre start under his predecessor Joseph Oosting.
In the program De Oosttribune of RTV Oost it is discussed whether both defenders would be able to handle the level of PSV. ''Three goals, which don't all fall to Rots and Nijstad, but when you look at long-range shots, crosses, how far there is still defending from the direct opponent... I think that is the case in the Netherlands in any case. In the penalty area, defending is done dramatically,'' says former defender Bert Konterman in the talk show.
''I think, especially in one-on-one duels, those guys really still have to take steps forward. Especially Rots. That needs to happen at FC Twente. You just have to get to work on that,'' continues Konterman.
After that, former footballer Jan van Staa joins the discussion. ''What I advocate: you should hire specialists. You should train that kind of players. Those guys need to get to work on that. That is where the profit is, in particular'', said Van Staa.
Then Van Staa points to Nijstad at one of PSV's strikes. ''Look at Nijstad. You can now see one of those goals. Weghorst, he had a similar moment too, where he was too far away from the man. He has to say: You don't head it, I head it. Or the other way around. You can't get into a duel like that. He needs to learn that he always has to feel his man,'' concludes the former footballer.

Eens. 1-tegen-1 is waar het verschil zit. Als ze dat nog niet kunnen dan ga je in Eindhoven snel onder druk fouten zien. 💀
"Dat vind ik sowieso in Nederland" is wel een beetje makkelijk gezegd, maar ik voel de kritiek. Als Nijstad moet leren zijn man altijd te voelen, dan is dat exact wat PSV dagelijks traint. Nog te vroeg? Misschien wel, maar het kan ook een slimme project-transfer zijn. 🔥
Ik snap het pleidooi voor specialisten, maar imo moet PSV niet te lang wachten met het oppakken van 1-opleiding. Als ze komen, dan meteen aan 1-op-1 en positionering sleutelen. Anders gaan diezelfde fouten ons punten kosten, zelfs als ze potentieel hebben.
Tbh het is ook lastig als je met hun duels kijkt bij Twente en je weet dat PSV in de top al veel strakker moet staan. Nijstad die bij dat doelpunt te ver staat, dat mag echt niet op dit niveau. 👀

Rots en Nijstad lijken me niet meteen het "PSV-niveau" achterin als je ziet hoe vaak er in de zestien dramatisch verdedigd wordt. Als Konterman zegt dat vooral Rots stappen moet maken, dan is dat geen hype maar gewoon ontwikkeling nodig. ⚽
Ik snap de vraag, maar PSV gaat juist zoeken naar versterking achterin. Als Van Staa zegt specialisten inhuren, dan klinkt het alsof ze ze wel kunnen laten groeien op het juiste moment. 1-tegen-1 en koppennen, dat is nu precies waar PSV ze op gaat testen.
Tbh Rots en Nijstad zijn niet slecht, maar Konterman zegt het goed: die duel- en verdedigingskeuzes zijn echt nog te slordig voor PSV. Als ze pas "stapjes" moeten maken, ben je weer een seizoen onderweg.
