Still annoyed about the missed transfer: “I saw a lot of chances to get to play at PSV.”
1 min readAfter his dazzling performance in the Eurojackpot KNVB Beker final on behalf of AZ, Sven Mijnans was once again linked to a transfer to PSV. The midfielder from Alkmaar appeared last year, just like Ruben van Bommel, to be on the verge of making the move to PSV, but the management in Alkmaar put a stop to it.
PSV desperately wanted to take over Mijnans last year, but despite that, AZ stood firm and decided to keep Mijnans in-house. In an interview with the magazine Voetbal International, the midfielder from Alkmaar Zaanstreek looks back on that transfer period.
''I had never experienced something like this before. My transfer from Sparta to AZ went incredibly smoothly, two and a half years earlier. For me, it was the perfect step at that time. In a similar way, PSV seemed to me last year like the perfect next step'', Mijnans tells VI.
Also due to a lot of injury trouble for captain Jordy Clasie, Mijnans played frequently with the captain's armband this season and as a result, according to the midfielder, he got a different role within the team. ''Someone who was training talents. That meant I had less opportunity to take the steps that I myself still wanted to take. At the same time, I saw good chances to start playing a lot at PSV. Also with the World Cup in mind, it seemed like a good time. No matter how you turn it or look at it, a national team coach looks more at PSV than at AZ. Sometimes I wonder how it would have turned out if I had chosen PSV after all,'' Mijnans said.
For the midfielder, it was therefore also unexpectedly that the transfer to PSV did not go through. ''A few months before that transfer window began, AZ indicated that they wanted to think along about whether it would be a good moment for a transfer. But in the final phase of that season, I played well and my return increased significantly. After that, the attitude of the club management changed,'' concludes the 26-year-old Mijnans.

Minder toe komen aan "stappen die ik zelf nog wilde zetten" vind ik interessant. Als hij bij PSV meer vrijheid had gekregen, had dit seizoen dan anders gelopen? Wie weet, maar AZ houdt hem dus dan wel lekker binnen.
bruh, die laatste fase waar hij rendement omhoog gooide en toen veranderde AZ meteen de houding... typisch. Maar ik vind ook dat hij zelf al zegt dat bondscoach meer naar PSV kijkt, dus frustie van het niet doorgaan snap ik wel 🔥
i dont get it, AZ wisselde gewoon de houding toen het goed ging. Als PSV hem echt had gewild, had AZ dat eerder moeten durven. De beste versie van Mijnans zie je juist in druk, niet als mid op training.
Als je het goed leest: AZ zei nog "meedenken" en later draaiden ze, omdat zijn rendement omhoog schoot. Begrijpelijk, maar dan bijten wij natuurlijk achteraf op iets waar je gewoon controle over wou hebben. 👀🔥

tbh i get why PSV wanted Mijnans, especially with Clasie injured. maar na die quote over "de perfecte vervolgstap" klinkt het bijna als een gemiste droom die we zelf hadden kunnen bouwen... 👀
