The Turkish top club inquired about Cody Gakpo

1 min read

According to the Turkish outlet Fanatik, Fenerbahçe SK has tried to bring former PSV fan favorite Cody Gakpo to Istanbul. Gakpo is still under contract with Liverpool FC, but according to various English media, he would be open to leaving Merseyside.

Among others, Tottenham Hotspur would very much like to bring the former PSV player to London. At Spurs, Gakpo could be reunited with Xavi Simons, with whom the winger played for PSV until the winter break in the 2022/2023 season.

According to Fanatik, Fenerbahçe has been informed about Gakpo, but the forward himself isn’t interested in a move to Turkey. As early as the first conversation, the former PSV player would have said ‘no’ to the Turkish top club.

For Gakpo, leaving Liverpool FC is only an option if he can continue his career in one of Europe’s top five competitions. The contract of the former PSV captain in England runs until mid-2030.

Despite all rumors about a departure by Gakpo, the born Eindhoven native reportedly still seems to be enjoying himself on Anfield Road for now. Now it remains to be seen whether the former PSV player will be enough to make a mark in the plans of the new Spanish coach Andoni Iraola, who has replaced the sacked Arne Slot, in the 2026/2027 season.

Imo the "top five competitions" condition makes any Turkish move basically dead on arrival. Unless Liverpool suddenly decide to sell for a big fee, i think his options stay limited to England or maybe a top club abroad.

Don't see him going to Istanbul. The article says his first convo was already a no, and he is under contract until mid-2030. Liverpool would only move him if Iraola needs a different profile.

If Spurs actually push it, the Xavi Simons reunion is a proper storyline. But Cody was never meant to be a bench gadget, he needs minutes. Otherwise its just another transfer rumor that dies in training.

"still has a good time at Anfield Road" is the key line for me. Rumours are loud, but players usually stay when they are happy and valued. If Slot is gone and Iraola comes in, we will see fast whether Cody is a starter or just depth.

Tbh i get why he said no to Turkey. Top five leagues or nothing, that's the whole point. But if Iraola changes the system and Cody doesnt fit, then i wouldnt be surprised if the door opens anyway.

Fenerbahce asking about Cody while hes still contracted and already picked "not interested" in the first convo... respect for the honesty 😂. Still, if Spurs can link him back with Xavi, that feels like the only real path for him out of Liverpool.

i swear these Turkish rumors always pop up for former PSV guys 😂 Tbh Cody being open only for top-five comps sounds realistic. If Spurs could reunite him with Xavi that would be the proper move.

Fenerbahce asking is funny, but Cody already said no. Still, if he ever leaves Liverpool it has to be top-5 quality, otherwise he loses the whole point.
