London | Premier League club wants to take Cody Gakpo from Liverpool, “wants to leave”

Cody Gakpo has played for Liverpool FC since the winter of the 2022/2023 season. The Reds signed the winger for an amount of at least 42 million euros from PSV and last season Gakpo won the league title with Liverpool.

Now the former PSV crowd favorite is preparing with the Netherlands national team for the World Cup in North America. Gakpo had a difficult season in England in which Arne Slot’s team failed to live up to the high expectations and finished only fifth in the Premier League.

Because of this, the club management of the team from Merseyside decided to put Slot out on the street. It also seems to make Gakpo’s future at Anfield uncertain, and Tottenham Hotspur would now be open to taking over the former PSV player.

With that news, transfer journalist Mounir Boualin of Soccernews.nl brings something to light. ''Our sources from England also indicate that the attacker himself has a desire to leave,'' the journalist writes.

Tottenham Hotspur managed to stay in the Premier League at the last minute this season, but despite this, the club from north London is putting a lot of focus on transfers that need to happen. ''They want to try in the coming period to loosen the Dutchman from Liverpool. With the new project under coach Roberto De Zerbi, they want to persuade him to make the move to London. Behind the scenes, Tottenham is working on a plan to convince the forward and Liverpool over the coming period,'' said Boualin.

Liverpool finished 5th and Slot was gone, so it makes sense they would re-evaluate their squad. Still, i do not buy that Tottenham is the "next project" automatically, because Gakpo needs stability more than hype. 🤬

i think Tottenham making a plan behind the scenes sounds nice, but Liverpool wont let him go easily. If Slot/structure is changing, they might want to keep their few stable attackers.

Tottenham "wil de komende periode gaan proberen de Nederlander los te weken bij Liverpool". Dat klinkt als een bod- of drukplan. Als PSV ooit weer herinnert moet worden aan Gakpo, dan liever dat hij topniveau haalt. Maar met zijn vorm in die lastige Engelse periode is het spannend.

Ik dont buy dat het puur voetbal is. Als Liverpool instort onder hoge verwachtingen, worden aanvallers altijd verkocht. Voor PSV is het wel mooi dat ze hem destijds voor 42 miljoen haalden, maar ik hoop dat hij niet verdwijnt naar een club die ook weer instabiel is.

Vijfde plek + Slot eruit en dan draait het transferverhaal alweer om Gakpo? 😂 Dit is typisch zo'n domino-effect. Tottenham met De Zerbi als lokmiddel klinkt leuk, maar de vraag is: gaat hij daar spelen of vooral bank warmhouden?

Tottenham making a move after Liverpool sack Slot feels like timing is everything. If Gakpo wants out, PSV fans will be torn, because we know he still has quality, but you can't stop a player chasing minutes and a new project.

Londen, weer een Nederlandse export die verhuist van Liverpool... tbh gun ik het Gakpo, maar PSV fans zien dit natuurlijk met pijn. 42 miljoen voelt nu als een deal die niemand daarna echt had moeten overdoen.

Als Tottenham echt gaat proberen Gakpo los te weken, snap ik het wel. Vierentwintig maanden bij Liverpool en dan zo'n onzekere plek, tbh dat ruikt naar afscheid. Wel jammer, want hij had hier echt een piekmoment.
