Wout Weghorst points to PSV after leaving Ajax transfer-free to join FC Twente

FC Twente has, according to its own account, pulled off a major coup. That opinions are divided about it both in Amsterdam and in Enschede is an understatement at best, but there you go. Weghorst will try to help FC Twente achieve successes.

That will have consequences for former PSV player Sam Lammers, but leaving that aside. According to De Telegraaf, the chance of a departure for the 29-year-old forward increases after the arrival of Wout Weghorst. The Enschede club also want to bring in a young striker as a stand-in for the Oranje international. The target is PSV.

FC Twente officially presented Weghorst on Saturday morning. The experienced striker made the move from Ajax transfervrije, and put his signature on a two-year contract. With his arrival, the role of Lammers appears to become significantly smaller, making a transfer likely.

'We were so close. I really would have liked it to turn out differently. I am very grateful to Ajax. But my time here hasn't been a success. To do that, we would have had to win the title', Weghorst points to matchweeks 33 and 34 of the previous season 2024-2025. Weghorst has already spoken out more than once about missing out on the title to PSV in May 2025.

The missed league title still hurts Weghorst, who in his farewell words on Ajax' website points to PSV. 'That trophy, champion of the Netherlands, would have been something very special,' said the striker.

"If FC Twente manages to sell Lammers for the desired amount, a young, second striker will join the team. Jesper Uneken (PSV) is in the picture for that", writes De Telegraaf reporter Jeroen Kapteijns. Lammers is still under contract in Enschede until the summer of 2027.

The attacker was taken over by Rangers in the summer of 2024 and played last season 25 league matches for FC Twente. In those, he was involved in fourteen goals, thanks to six strikes and eight assists.

Over the years, Lammers built an impressive list of clubs. The striker went through PSV’s youth academy and then played for sc Heerenveen, Atalanta, Eintracht Frankfurt, Empoli, Sampdoria, Rangers and FC Utrecht, where he appeared multiple times on loan for another club.
