Guus Til candid about World Championship ambitions: “I hope we’re going to go all out as a team.”
1 min readAfter a strong season at PSV, Guus Til can prepare to join the Netherlands national team for the 2026 World Cup in North America. This will be Til’s first major tournament with Oranje, and the midfielder will be the only PSV player representing the club for the Netherlands.
Wednesday evening Oranje plays the final friendly match in De Kuip against Algeria, after which national team coach Ronald Koeman’s squad will travel to North America. Next Monday, the Netherlands will also play a friendly in New York City against Uzbekistan, who will be making their World Cup debut.
In an interview with Ziggo Sport, Til is candid about his call-up. ''I don’t really see social media as real life,'' the PSV player tells Sam van Royen, since the midfielder had not posted on social media in response to his spot in the World Cup squad.
However, the midfielder, who this season at PSV mainly made a name for himself as a makeshift striker, was advised not to look at his phone. ''I have had that. I'm also not sure whether I reacted to everyone. It was busy, though'', said Til.
Til heard directly from Koeman himself that the head coach was convinced enough to select him. ''I heard it from the coach himself. We had that three-day training camp and those guys were immediately told whether they were in or not. We heard it on the day it became known to everyone. At that camp I thought: I’ll see and then push the gas'', the PSV player says about it.
Despite the fact that the midfielder was last with the Netherlands national team squad in October 2024, Til has taken into account an eventual call-up for the World Cup throughout this entire season. ''If you play at the top in the Netherlands and especially when you’re with the champions, I think that if you’re a Dutch boy playing there, it should always be your ambition to come into the Netherlands national team. So of course that was still on my mind, but also the year before. So that’s not something from today or yesterday. It would be strange if I were playing for the champions and said: the Netherlands national team, that’s nothing,'' the outlet striker says.
Finally, Til wants to go out with the entire squad and make a big impact in North America. "I hope we go out there and make it happen as a team. And that we all believe in it. We have to go as far as possible. I hope we pull it off," said the PSV player.

Het advies om niet op z'n telefoon te kijken is wel heel Til, lekker nuchter. "We moeten zo ver mogelijk komen" is goed, maar ik wil vooral zien dat hij niet alleen meters maakt, ook acties afrondt. Anders wordt het weer zo'n speler die leuk is, maar niet decisive. 💀
Leuk verhaal over die driedaagse stage met Koeman. Maar ik vraag me af of Til op het WK echt als middenvelder gaat starten, of toch vaker als tweede spits/aanvaller wordt ingezet. Koeman selecteert hem omdat hij kan "gas geven", prima, maar PSV-fans weten ook dat hij dan wel tempo en duels nodig heeft. Verdedigend moet het ook kloppen. 👀
"ik zie social media eigenlijk niet als het echte leven" is wel nuchter van Til, maar ik snap ook dat zo'n selectie aankondiging iedereen meteen van alles laat posten. Ik vind het vooral sterk dat hij van Koeman advies kreeg om niet op zijn telefoon te kijken, dat is echt focus. Wel vraag ik me af of hij fysiek genoeg minuten kan maken als hij niet altijd start.
"Ik hoop dat we gaan knallen als team" klinkt mooi, maar je moet het ook in duels laten zien. Als Til het spel gaat versnellen en agressiever in de ruimte gaat, dan kan Oranje echt gas geven.
Til als enige PSV'er in Oranje is wel een statement hoor. 🐐 Hopelijk maakt hij daar diezelfde energie als bij PSV, niet alleen als gelegenheidsspits.

Til als enige PSV'er bij Oranje... man man, eindelijk weer iemand die durft op te vallen. Als hij die rol als gelegenheidsspits doorpakt in de groep, dan is hij bij WK-momenten echt gevaarlijk. Hopelijk "knallen als team" geen mooie woorden maar gewoon rendement. ⚽🔥
Til als enige PSV'er bij Oranje is wel echt respect. Maar die "gelegenheidsspits" rol bij PSV gaat hem op het WK lastig passen, hoop dat Koeman hem durft te gebruiken als optie in ruimtes. Als hij "knalt als team" zegt, dan wil ik ook zien dat hij zelf de tempo-momenten pakt.
Til opgeroepen voor zijn eerste WK en dan ook nog die "knallen als team" mentaliteit. Lijkt me echt precies het soort jongen dat Koeman graag heeft, energie en geen gedoe. Hopelijk krijgt hij daar ook minuten als gelegenheidsspits.
