1 min readIt will have been impossible for almost anyone in the Netherlands to miss the fact that Joey Veerman has said that national coach Ronald Koeman no longer needs to call him up for the Netherlands national team. After the PSV - FC Twente match (5-1), Veerman told ESPN’s cameras that he is done with the situation in which the coach keeps hammering on the character of the midfielder.
Two months ago, the national team coach was still being inducted into the Walk of Fame at the Philips Stadium because of his record as a footballer and coach of PSV. Last week, however, Koeman couldn’t help but, in a sense, take a swipe at Veerman.
More and more, the necessary journalists are also understanding little more about Koeman’s communication regarding Veerman. In the podcast Kick-off from De Telegraaf, Mike Verweij points to the PSV fans, who, according to him, would be more or less done with it that Koeman is making Veerman look bad.
“It starts to irritate PSV supporters that Koeman every time still has to hand out a little compliment to Veerman. Because there was a suggestion on X. I mean, anyone can do that. So we shouldn't attach too much value to it. Someone said, 'Get that Koeman out of the Walk of Fame, if you're damaging a PSV player like that every time,' Verweij says about the national coach. In doing so, Verweij refers to Koeman being included in PSV's Walk of Fame, which has recently been in the spotlight.”
'Now Koeman has, of course, achieved quite a lot for PSV. But why does it have to be every time again and again? Veerman has said that, yes, I'm done after the last league match. So at a certain point you have to, and that's why I also said, I think, that Koeman just shouldn't respond anymore. Because at a certain point Koeman said, I'd rather not have to talk about it anymore...', said Mike Verweij, who is taking Veerman's side once again.

Ik snap dat Mike Verweij PSV-supporters aanhaalt, maar Koeman zal ook denken dat hij Joey wil helpen met focus en mentaliteit. Toch is timing alles, en nu voelt het als voortdurende schaduw over Veerman. Smh.
"haal die Koeman maar uit die Walk of Fame" is overdreven, maar wel tekenend. Als Veerman zegt klaar te zijn, respecteer dat dan gewoon, niet telkens olie op het vuur gooien. 👀
5-1 vs Twente en dan is het weer Nederlands elftal drama... tbh Koeman had gewoon minder moeten praten na die X-suggestie. Laat Veerman focus houden en PSV ook gewoon, dit voelt als afleiding.
Koeman uit Walk of Fame PSV... dan moet je ook niet blijven prikken bij je ex-club-spelers. Als Veerman zegt klaar te zijn, respecteer dat gewoon. 💯
Verweij heeft wel een punt: als er vanuit X al iets geroepen wordt, reageer er dan niet elke keer op via dezelfde narratief. Koeman is Walk of Fame-waardig, maar dit gedoe maakt het juist kleiner. 🤡
i swear, die PSV-fans worden echt moe van het constante gedoe rond Joey. Na PSV - Twente 5-1 had niemand behoefte aan Koeman die weer een steekje uitdeelt, ngl 🤬.
Ik snap Verweij deels, maar Koeman heeft ook gewoon een visie. Alleen als Veerman publiek aangeeft klaar te zijn, dan hoeft die roep om "karakter" niet telkens opnieuw gespeeld te worden.
i snappie dat Koeman z'n kant kiest, maar als Veerman zegt dat ie klaar is, dan laat je het toch gewoon rusten? Tbh PSV-fans zijn dat gezeur op een gegeven moment zat, vooral na zo'n wedstrijd.

mensen op X roepen wat ze willen, maar die Walk of Fame discussie is wel echt buiten proportie. Koeman zendt toch vooral zijn boodschap voor het EK, maar kom op... laat Veerman.

Koeman haalt overal "karakter" bij Veerman, alsof het alleen daar om gaat. Jongens, we zagen gewoon 5-1, en Veerman deed zijn werk.
Veerman zegt klaar te zijn en dan gaat Koeman weer zo'n karakter-gedoe herhalen. Begrijp wel dat PSV-fans dat zat zijn, zeker na 5-1 tegen Twente... gewoon spelen en klaar.
