English media point to the dismissal of Arne Slot, also linked to PSV

1 min read

Most British analysts and journalists broadly agree that Arne Slot's sacking by Liverpool comes like a bolt from the blue. Especially in terms of timing, there are many questions to be raised about Slot's departure from Liverpool.

Analyst and former Liverpool player Steven Gerrard is, meanwhile, about the only one who can be found that agrees with Slot’s dismissal at Liverpool. English media are running with everything now that Slot has lost his job. Also the defeat against PSV in November is coming up in English newspapers. It is being called a low point, by numerous English newspapers, that the 1-4 against PSV’s countrymen knows how to describe as extremely painful.

"Nearly laughable", Slot already described in November the unprecedented spiral of poor results in which Liverpool had become trapped. This included the 1-4 defeat against PSV, according to Slot.

Three times last summer Liverpool paid heavily for new players. First for Florian Wirtz (125 million euros), then for Hugo Ekitiké (95 million euros) and, right before the market closed, once more for Alexander Isak (145 million euros). None of the three marquee signings could truly live up to the high expectations.

'The sporting low point in the autumn was a 1-4 home defeat against PSV in the Champions League. During that period, Slot received many questions from English journalists about his successor, never too reluctant to stoke a fire. Slot brushed it off with a joke, but behind his lighthearted answer you could hear irritation', writes The Daily Mail on Saturday shortly after Slot’s dismissal.

"To be honest, I never expected to end up in this situation", Slot admitted after the 1-4 against PSV at Anfield. "I thought: with a tactical adjustment or an inspiring speech, with the quality players that are here, it can never be the case that you lose so many in a row?", Slot said at the time, among other things, about the heavy home defeat against Peter Bosz's men.

Losing 1-4 at home to PSV is such a brutal turning point. Still, the Salah situation sounds like the real leak, not just results.

The quote about never expecting to be in

If this really ends up with Slot to PSV, tbh i want it just for the tactical clarity. Liverpool had the talent but looked clueless in big moments.

i snap dat ze na Jota rouwden, dat is echt niet weg te denken. Maar als je vervolgens 483 miljoen uitgeeft en Wirtz, Ekitiké en Isak brengen geen flow, dan is er meer aan de hand dan alleen pech. 👀

If this is true, Slot lost control of that dressing room. Salah getting benched and that "under the bus" thing is nightmare fuel for any manager. tbh with 483m spent you should see way more than late winner vibes.
