Analyst Ziggo Sport skeptical about Til in the Oranje squad: “No chance at all”
1 min readGuus Til was told on Wednesday by national coach Ronald Koeman that he has been given a place in the Netherlands national team's World Cup squad. After a strong season at PSV, Til therefore receives the reward he is due.
Yet there are a few analysts who cast doubt on the call-up of the attacking midfielder, who this season at PSV made a name for himself primarily as a poacher. Thus, Ziggo Sport analyst Rafael van der Vaart previously opted for Kees Smit of AZ.
This tells Van der Vaart in the new podcast Wes & Raf from Ziggo Sport together with former teammate Wesley Sneijder. ''What he does and what he has done is truly incredibly impressive. He is fantastic for the PSV team. But in the Netherlands national team... Listen, really no chance. But we said that about Davy Klaassen and Donny van de Beek as well. Those are players with qualities, but as number ten for the Netherlands national team, so much more comes into play'', the former midfielder tells Sneijder.
Therefore, the former international had counted earlier on the talent Kees Smit instead of Guus Til. ''I didn’t expect this (the call-up from Til, ed.). Then I really would have brought Kees Smit along. If you see him as a Dutch football country, the biggest talent, then let him explore. Every bit of experience helps. We’ll benefit from that in four years,'' Van der Vaart is firm.
Sneijder joins the words of his colleague and former team-mate as well. ''Especially because Til has mainly had a great season as a striker at PSV. So then I find it strange that he has been called up as a midfielder. Then I would also have preferred to see Kees Smit. Then he (Koeman, ed.) perhaps still chooses certainty,'' said the record international.

Kees Smit future argument is fair, maar je hoort ook dat Til "topseizoen" heeft gehad. Coaches can gamble, imo Til is not some random name, he earned it. 💯
Eens dat Til meer als spits uitblinkt, maar je kan ook gewoon lezen wat Koeman zoekt. In Oranje is ruimte anders, maar Til heeft ritme en productie. 👀⚽
Ik snap de twijfel wel vanuit "nummer tien" vergelijking, maar deze redenering voelt alsof het pas klopt als je meteen de exacte rol speelt. Til is op basis van zijn seizoen geselecteerd en zelfs Van der Vaart zegt ook dat hij voor PSV fantastisch is. Dus waarom is dat in Oranje ineens onhaalbaar? 🤔
Goeie nuance van Sneijder: topschaal in Oranje hangt af van rol en positie. Bij PSV kan Til ruimte trekken als spits, als middenvelder moet hij het dreigend maken op een andere manier. Hopelijk pakt Koeman dit slim aan, anders is het inderdaad "zekerheid" i.p.v. groei. 👀
Wesley zei ook al dat Til vooral als spits top was, maar tbh dit is precies waarom hij bij ons zo waardevol is. Met ruimte als gelegenheidsspits én kan hij terugvallen als middenveld... dat "merkwaardig" vind ik overdreven. Bovendien Kees Smit is talent, maar Til is vorm. 🚀⚽
Ik vind het vooral merkwaardig dat ze het "zekerheid" noemen. Til heeft bij PSV toch bewezen dat hij taken snapt en rendement kan pakken. Geef hem wedstrijden en hij groeit, zoals met Klaassen en Van de Beek ook vaak gebeurde.
I disagree with the Klaassen and Van de Beek comparison. Til is doing specific stuff for PSV, running lanes, scoring, linking play. If Koeman wants options off the bench, Til makes sense.
"Echt geen kans" is wel een beetje dom, jongens. Til kan wél brengen in drukmomenten, zeker met PSV-ritme 🔥⚽
Als je Til vergelijkt met Kees Smit, snap ik de keuze niet helemaal. Til was bij PSV vaak een probleem voor verdedigers, daar telt vooral productie. Maar Sneijder is ook logisch, als nummer tien komt er tactiek bij kijken en dan moet je 100 procent passen in het systeem.
tbh i get why they question it, Til is at PSV vooral gelegenheidsspits, not that classic "10". Maar als hij in Oranje dezelfde druk en energie brengt, dan is "geen kans" gewoon media-talk.
"Echt geen kans" is wel hard, tbh. Til heeft juist laten zien dat hij tempo kan maken en kansen kan afmaken, en dat kan Oranje ook nodig hebben. Vraag is alleen of hij als middenvelder genoeg tussen de linies komt.
Van der Vaart saying
Zit toch met die vraagtekens van Van der Vaart. Til deed het bij PSV top, maar in Oranje als gelegenheidsspits is ie niet automatisch nummer 10 waardig. Koeman kiest mogelijk voor zekerheid, maar dan wel ten koste van ontwikkeling.
ngl Rafael zegt "echt geen kans" en ik snap zijn punt, maar bij PSV heeft Til toch echt bewijs geleverd. Als Koeman hem oproept, betekent dat hij iets gaat brengen in Oranje, geen toeval.
Eens met het punt dat hij in PSV vooral als spits knokte. Maar dat betekent niet dat hij in Oranje geen waarde heeft, juist als je fases omschakelt en ruimte creëert.
Til verdient het na z'n seizoen, maar tbh ik snap de twijfel van Van der Vaart. Als Koeman hem als gelegenheidsspits inzet in Oranje dan kan het wel goed vallen, anders wordt het lastig.
