Conversation with Peter Bosz | “One day I thought, it will be PSV; the next day, no, not really”

Ruud Nijstad has put his signature to a new contract at FC Twente. The 18-year-old defender signed an agreement through mid-2029. In the past period, there has been a lot of discussion about a possible contract extension for Ruud Nijstad. In particular, PSV was mentioned as a next step.

In conversation with Voetbal International, Nijstad provides extensive explanation about his new contract at FC Twente and about the choice of PSV, which was very concrete for Nijstadt and wanted to pay what FC Twente asked.

'Twente, PSV, Eintracht Frankfurt. Advantage, advantage, advantage. Disadvantage, disadvantage, disadvantage. Everything laid out. With Frankfurt, for example, a disadvantage was that I would have to go there on my own. Would I then feel good about it? Financially, it would have been a better step. What do you think is important now?', says Nijstad in conversation with Voetbal International.

His choice fell on a longer stay with Twente. 'I love the little game and I just want to play football. Guarantees on playing time you won’t get anywhere—you have to make it happen yourself. If the coach says, 'Ruud, I think you're not training well. I'm more positive about others'. Then that's how it is. It depends on myself. Here I'm in my own environment. That's a fact. Do I feel comfortable, close to family and friends.'

Nijstad goes on and says that Peter Bosz called him. 'Top five in the Netherlands. And there is a good plan here, which Erik ten Hag clearly explained to my parents and agent. You might get injured. Wouldn't be great. But I'll get over that too.'

‘I doubted for a very long time. Only on the day it became known did I make my choice. I considered everything very carefully. I spoke with a lot of people. But in the end I really made my own choice. The first thing I said about Frankfurt was: No, that’s not it for me now. That was two days before I signed. So it was still between PSV and Twente. I spoke with Peter Bosz, by phone. Very good conversation, a really nice man. In my view, PSV is the best club in the Netherlands. Three times in a row champions, Champions League football. A good environment for young people. It went back and forth. One day I thought: PSV it is. The next day: No, still Twente. That’s how it should be. Twente gave me the best feeling', said Ruud Nijstad.

Bosz bellen klinkt echt top, en die "topvijf van Nederland" vind ik wel een mooie insteek. Maar eerlijk, als PSV al die concrete interesse had, dan doet het Twente-verhaal pijn... Toch respect voor zijn keuze.
