Paul Wanner & Co. beat World Cup opponent Oranje
1 min readPaul Wanner made the decision at the start of this calendar year to pursue an international career on behalf of Austria, despite the fact that Wanner played many youth international matches for Germany. The PSV player has also been called up by national team coach Ralf Rangnick for the World Cup squad of the Alpine country.
Austria is gearing up for its first World Cup since 1998 and last Monday evening, Rangnick's side played a friendly against Tunisia, an opponent of the Netherlands national team during the group stage of the World Cup. Despite Tunisia having the better chances and a red card for Konrad Laimer, it was 0-0 at halftime.
In the second half, former PSV player Phillipp Mwene came on at halftime for the captain David Alaba of Real Madrid, while Wanner still had to wait for his substitution. Wanner eventually came onto the field in the 62nd minute for Xaver Schlager, and a minute after the PSV player had taken the field, Austria took a 1-0 lead through Marcel Sabitzer (Borussia Dortmund).
Just before time, Wanner still got a chance to make it 2-0, but his attempt went high over the Tunisian goal. In the end, the team managed to win 1-0 against the North African country despite being a man down.
This was the last dress rehearsal for the Austrians before the global final tournament in North America. At the World Cup, Wanner & Co. will compete in Group J against reigning world champions Argentina, Algeria, and World Cup debutants Jordan.

Ngng, die kans vlak voor tijd van Wanner, schraal over. Als dat 2-0 was, was het verhaal helemaal af, maar winst blijft winst, zeker als het WK zich aankondigt. 🔥
Wanner kreeg vlak voor tijd nog die kans voor 2-0, en dan gaat het hoog over. Dat is precies zo'n moment dat op een WK gaat wegen, dus ik hoop dat hij dat in poule J wel scherp heeft. 👀
Interessant dat Rangnick Wanner pas na 62 minuten brengt. Tbh als je de kansen niet benut en er staat ook nog een rode kaart, dan wil je juist die versnelling eerder. Al is het natuurlijk wel mooi dat ze toch winnen.

Wanner in de 62e is best laat, maar die assistende energie was er wel. Tbh Sabitzer die meteen scoort maakt het wel lekker voor Oostenrijk.
Wanner dan toch Oostenrijk... i snap de keuze, maar voelt wel dubbel na al die Duitse jeugdinterlands. Wel lekker dat Sabitzer meteen raak schiet en Wanner alsnog minuten maakt. 🔥⚽
Tbh ik vind het wel grappig dat Oostenrijk kiest voor Wanner ondanks zijn Duitse jeugd. Maar goed, op het WK tegen Argentinië ga je dit soort sub-impact nodig hebben. Hopelijk blijft hij fit en krijgt hij meer speeltijd dan alleen 62e minuut.
Wanner die in de 62e minuut komt en dan meteen impact maakt, dat is precies wat je wilt zien bij PSV jongens. Sabitzer op 1-0 is ook lekker, maar die kans vlak voor tijd... zonde dat het niet 2-0 werd 🔥
