Bosz lyrically on defender: “He has to know when he should stand high up on the pitch.”
1 min readLast summer, Kiliann Sildillia was taken over by PSV from the German club SC Freiburg, and the French right-back has had to make do with the majority of substitute appearances this season. Partly due to defensive problems at the back, the wing-back has been starting for the past few months, and in the match against Go Ahead Eagles, Sildillia provided an assist for Ivan Perisic.
After Go Ahead Eagles - PSV (1-4), coach Peter Bosz was also very impressed with the French defender during the press conference. ''He’s a very smart kid for sure. Kiliann is one of the players I allow to stand a bit more 'firmly' in place, but he still has to make room again,'' said Bosz afterwards, as quoted by VoetbalPrimeur.
According to the coach, the French defender has played a crucial role in his team in recent weeks. ''He needs to know when he should position himself high up the pitch. We are used to watching the ball, but there need to be spaces created and Kiliann also plays an important role there,'' Bosz said.

Bosz making it sound so tactical about Sildillia, but honestly I have loved the way he keeps showing up in those minutes. The assist for Perisic vs Go Ahead was exactly the kind of impact you want from a wingback.
I like the upside, but I still worry that
Bosz is right, Sildillia looks like he finally gets the timing. Against Go Ahead he wasn't just defending, he was helping Perisic get going. Love that he can make those spaces for the attackers.
"Hoog op het veld staan" sounds nice, but I want to see consistency from him for a full 90 minutes. If he keeps creating those chances and stays disciplined, he can be a key piece for Bosz. Go Ahead was a great example.
Good quotes from Bosz, but I still get nervous when we rely on fullbacks to decide when to step high. If Sildillia is a bit late, that space behind him becomes a problem fast. Still, his recent performances are promising.
Being
Bosz is right here, Sildillia looks like he finally knows when to jump high and when to drop. The assist for Perisic vs Go Ahead felt like exactly that idea in action.
I like his energy, but I still think we need to be careful with these high positioning instructions. If the timing is off, it leaves a big gap behind. Still, he looks smarter lately, Bosz clearly has him working on the details.
Bosz is right, Sildillia finally looks like someone who understands the game beyond just defending. The assist for Perisic showed he can contribute going forward, not only cover. I love that he keeps "space making" in the Plan.
Bosz is right, Sildillia is becoming more than just a defender. The quote about knowing when to step high is exactly what we need for the way we build attacks. The assist to Perisic vs Go Ahead was such a nice sign.
