Valentijn Driessen is sure: ‘He’s going to Liverpool’
1 min readValentijn Driessen is actually quite certain that former PSV player Denzel Dumfries will move for millions of euros to the Liverpool of Cody Gakpo.
Driessen is therefore firmly convinced and expects that Denzel Dumfries’ future lies at Liverpool. According to the journalist at De Telegraaf, Dumfries makes the move to the team of coach Arne Slot possible. The fact that Jeremie Frimpong is already at the club would, according to Driessen, not be a hindrance to that possible transfer from Milan to Liverpool. Frimpong holds the same position as Dumfries, but according to Driessen that will not be a hindrance.
Driessen was asked which club Denzel Dumfries will play for after the upcoming summer transfer window. "Liverpool," he replies during the Kick-off Podcast of De Telegraaf with great certainty. "I’ve already heard those reports before and I said it then too. There won’t be any follow-up now, but I think it will become clear after the season."
At Liverpool FC, Jeremie Frimpong is currently filling in the right flank, but according to Valentijn Driessen that doesn’t have to be a problem. He sees no reason why both Frimpong and Denzel Dumfries would not be able to play in the same squad. "With the Netherlands national team you also have Frimpong and Dumfries. So you always have a good alternative. I think Denzel Dumfries is defensively better than Frimpong."

This season, Denzel Dumfries still did not see much action for reigning champions Internazionale. Injuries meant he managed to play just 27 matches for Internazionale. Nevertheless, the former PSV player was good for five goals and one assist.
The contract of the thirty-year-old defender still runs until mid-2028 after he had already been linked earlier with Everton, Chelsea and FC Barcelona. Dumfries has a release clause of 25 million euros, which applies only to foreign clubs and can moreover be activated exclusively in July 2026.

The release clause detail is the real headline for me. 25 million for foreign clubs only, and not until July 2026, so if Liverpool want him this summer, this story might be more talk than plan.
Dumfries has those moments where he can create chaos in attack, even if he is not playing every week at Inter. 27 games is not nothing, and five goals plus one assist is decent for a wing-back.
That quote about Dumfries being defensively better than Frimpong convinced me a bit. Still, Internazionale might not want to lose him for a summer only clause like that.
I like Dumfries, but honestly I doubt Liverpool suddenly pays for him just because of a few recent rumors. Also, if he is defensively better than Frimpong, why is Frimpong the one starting there already?
If Driessen is that sure, it feels like a Liverpool move is basically done. The Frimpong argument also makes sense, two options on the right.
Driessen klinkt echt heel zeker, and I love the drama. Dumfries to Liverpool would make sense, especially if Slot wants that aggressive wing-back type. But 25m only for July 2026 is a funny detail, so I wonder if this is more talk than concrete plans.
