No transfer to an Eredivisie club for Ihattaren due to a special reason
1 min readA great future was predicted for Mohamed Ihattaren when the midfielder made his debut in January 2019 at the age of sixteen under Mark van Bommel in PSV’s first team. A season later, Ihattaren was even one of PSV’s key players at seventeen, but for various private reasons it all went wrong afterward.
Under coach Roger Schmidt, the former talent then ended up on the sidelines and, via various loan spells, the current playmaker of Fortuna Sittard found his way to Ajax. There too, the 24-year-old midfielder did not get the chance to play, and ultimately, via among others RKC Waalwijk, he ended up in Sittard.
For the Fortunezen, Ihattaren was of great value last season and the midfielder therefore hopes to make a transfer. A move to AZ is out of the question for the former PSV player, as coach Leeroy Echteld of Alkmaar Zaanstreek has said.
The coach tells TV sports channel ESPN that, due to his data, the midfielder is not a reinforcement for Alkmaarders, which Ihattaren does see as a good footballer. ''Ihattaren came to the fore and the question was whether he could have played for the Moroccan team. They know my relationship with Mo and I gave my opinion about it. I think he is a beautiful and good player'', the coach said earlier to Mocro Inside.
Nevertheless, according to the coach, Ihattaren currently is not a serious option, and in an interview with ESPN Echteld explains why. ''Only we at AZ place a lot of faith in data, and based on that we select our players,'', Echteld explains. "At the moment, therefore, he cannot play for us. There are, of course, always exceptions, but I don't think that applies at the moment,'' the coach says to the sports broadcaster.

Ihattaren heeft wél kwaliteit, dat zie je. Alleen bij PSV/Schmidt was het ook vooral mentaal en vertrouwen, dus dan is het logisch dat AZ zegt nu niet. Wel zuur dat hij nooit echt doorpakt op topniveau.
"Alleen wij als AZ geloven heel erg in data" dus dan is het gewoon klaar. Ik snap de keuze, maar voor Mo voelt het echt als opnieuw gemiste kans. Hopelijk vindt hij bij Fortuna eindelijk ritme.

tbh dit voelt nog steeds als een PSV-verhaal dat net te vroeg is misgelopen. Ihattaren had echt niveau, maar als data bij AZ de deur dichtgooit is het alweer een andere discussie. Benieuwd of hij ooit weer dat "dragende speler" niveau kan halen bij Fortuna.
Tbh dit klinkt als zo'n verhaal dat je kunt laten botsen tussen voetbalgevoel en data. Maar als AZ echt zo strikt is, dan is het vooral jammer dat Ihattaren al jaren zijn momentum kwijt is.
