PSV watcher provides clarity after missed transfer: “They haven’t taken any concrete steps”

1 min read

Thanks in part to the long period of uncertainty surrounding whether or not Anass Salah-Eddine would remain, Mats Rots has been repeatedly linked in recent months with a possible transfer to PSV. On Tuesday morning, however, news broke that Rots was sold for sixteen million euros to the German club TSG Hoffenheim, and PSV therefore missed out.

Also Erik ten Hag, technical director of the Tukkers, confirmed on Tuesday the transfer of the left-back to the Bundesliga. For FC Twente, the amount of sixteen million euros including bonuses is a record amount with regard to outgoing transfers.

Despite the fact that the defender has been repeatedly linked to PSV in recent months, PSV itself has never really taken action to bring Rots to Eindhoven. PSV watcher Jeroen Kapteijns of De Telegraaf tells this in the podcast Kick-off of that same newspaper.

''He was on the list, but they have not taken any concrete steps. For this kind of money, PSV couldn't have signed him'', says Kapteijns in the podcast after the journalist is asked whether PSV missed out.

According to the PSV watcher, Rots would possibly have been better off making a step toward the Dutch top first, but Kapteijns also acknowledges that due to the asking price it is almost impossible for the Dutch top clubs to bring in players of that sort. ''For a player like Rots, it would have been good to first make an intermediate step at a club like PSV, and then move on to the Premier League or Bundesliga. But you can see that that price has become unaffordable for Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord'', the journalist said.

Besides Rots, PSV would also be interested in Kodai Sano from NEC. ''PSV might still be able to pay for him. But he could also have played against PSV in the Champions League'', Mike Verweij says in response.
