1 min readThe discussion in the Netherlands about the succession of Ronald Koeman as head coach of the Netherlands national team has already been in full swing for a week now. Koeman announced last week that he would step down as head coach after Oranje were eliminated by Morocco at the World Cup in North America.
Among others, the names of Arne Slot, Pep Guardiola and Michael Reiziger are being widely mentioned as a new national team coach. The name of Peter Bosz is also frequently mentioned, despite the fact that Bosz has extended his contract with PSV until mid-2028.
Former PSV player and also a European champion with Oranje in 1988 Wim Kieft believes that the KNVB could put a line through the name of Pep Guardiola, who was coach of Manchester City from 2016 until last season and announced that he would stop at The Citizens. Kieft tells this in the podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp.
''Pep Guardiola? He shouldn’t get involved with that'', says the former PSV player firmly in the podcast.
Kooi thinks it is a hopeless mission to sound out the Spaniard about the Netherlands national team coach role. ''Surely you don't believe that when Nigel de Jong calls him and tosses the ball up, Guardiola says he's going to think about it?'' the former striker wonders aloud.
Despite this, caretaker Rob Jansen is of the opinion that the KNVB should give him a call. ''The chance is small, but he could very easily think quite differently than we do. If we all think that Guardiola isn’t going to do it, he might still think: Well, that Dutch national team, I might just look into that. I’m not saying it’s completely out of the question'', Jansen said.

Guardiola als bondscoach is niet mijn eerste gedachte, maar de quote van Kieft blijft wel staan. "Je gelooft toch niet...". Dat kan, maar ik denk dat Guardiola altijd tactisch nieuwsgierig is en Oranje mag dan misschien niet wereldtop-plek zijn, het is wel Oranje.
"Je gelooft toch niet" ja precies, zo voelt het ook. Tbh ik zou wel willen dat de KNVB slim onderhandelt, maar niet doen alsof Guardiola zomaar zin heeft in bondscoachplicht. Uiteindelijk gaat het toch om keuzes die werken binnen de KNVB-cyclus, niet om namen voor de hype. 🔥
Bosz op medio 2028, en dan toch weer Guardiola als gespreksonderwerp... onrealistisch. Peter Bosz als PSV'er en stilaan bewezen in Nederland zou bij Oranje beter passen dan een man die City op een gegeven moment gewoon laat lopen. Voor NL is tempo en duidelijkheid cruciaal, niet een droomscenario. 👀
Guardiola "even polsen" is gewoon mid-tactic, niks meer. Kieft zegt letterlijk: Pep moet daar toch niet aan beginnen, en eerlijk is dat ook het meest logisch. 🤡 Waar ligt dan de impuls voor Oranje?
Ik snap wel dat Bosz genoemd wordt, want die is gewoon bij PSV doorgegaan. Guardiola is top, maar tbh het ruikt naar een hype-naam. De KNVB moet eerst kijken naar fit met spelers en KNVB-voetbal, niet naar sterrenplaatjes.
Ik snap wel Rob Jansen hoor, "kleine kans" is soms toch een gok die je moet nemen. Maar bruh, als Guardiola gaat luisteren naar Nigel en zo, dan bedoel ik... lol, dat is marketing praat. Ik zou zeggen bel Slot of Bosz eerst, geef die onderhandelingen tenminste echt energie.
Wim Kieft heeft toch gewoon gelijk, Pep als bondscoach van NL is echt een "waarom zouden ze dat doen" verhaal. De KNVB kan beter kijken naar een coach die al top gewend is met NL-profielen, niet iemand die waarschijnlijk nooit die stap zet. tbh, kans is echt mini.
Nigel de Jong belt hem en dan nog eens nadenken? 😂 Dit is toch gewoon clownwerk van de mensen die Guardiola niet serieus nemen. Als hij ooit vrij komt, is Oranje wel een soort droomjob hoor.
Maar als de KNVB echt belt, why not? Volgens Rob Jansen kan het zomaar dat Pep anders denkt dan wij. Al is het kansloos, je laat geen kans liggen als het gaat om een coach van dat kaliber.
Kieft zegt het lekker cru: "Pep Guardiola? Die moet daar toch niet aan beginnen". Tbh kan ik hem wel snappen, de overstap van City naar Oranje voelt echt als een stap omlaag qua project.
