Two former PSV players meet Esmir Bajraktarevic at the World Cup ahead
1 min readThe 2026 World Cup is getting closer every day, and more and more participating countries are making their squad known for the global final tournament in North America. Thus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Esmir Bajraktarevic, was the first participating country to announce its squad, and of course the winger from PSV is included in the squad of the Balkan nation.
Bajraktarevic plays with Bosnia in Group B against co-host Canada, Switzerland and Qatar. The Swiss have also announced their squad with which the Alpine country will travel to the World Cup.
Swiss national team coach Murat Yakin has made room in his squad for two former PSV players. Goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo and left-back Ricardo Rodriguez are part of Yakin's squad.
Rodriguez played on loan for PSV in 2020, but due to the outbreak of the coronavirus he only played six matches for PSV. Nevertheless, PSV tried to permanently sign the left-back from AC Milan, but both clubs failed to come to an agreement and the Swiss player returned to Milan before then leaving for Torino FC.
Nowadays, Rodriguez is active in Spain with Real Betis. Yvon Mvogo came on loan in the summer of 2020 from RB Leipzig and, by the new coach Roger Schmidt, was promoted to first-choice goalkeeper over Lars Unnerstall.
Despite a disastrous start from the Swiss goalkeeper, Schmidt kept faith in the last line of defense, but in his second season Mvogo ended up on the bench for Joël Drommel. However, Drommel was also not beyond criticism, and so in February 2022 Mvogo was given a new chance in the league match at home against AZ.
Here too the Swiss made a terrible mistake, which meant PSV lost at home 1-2, after which he had to make way again for Drommel. In the last six league matches of the 2021/2022 season, Mvogo, just like in the won Cup final against Ajax (2-1), was under the bar, and in the summer the goalkeeper returned to RB Leipzig before subsequently leaving for FC Lorient in France.

"twee voormalig PSV'ers" in dezelfde Zwitserse selectie is wel lache, maar laat ons niet doen alsof het automatisch goed gaat. Yvon Mvogo moest bij Schmidt zelfs genoegen nemen met bank, dus ik wacht even of hij nu echt de nummer 1-status heeft. Anders is het WK voor Zwitserland vooral overleven. 🙄
"Esmir Bajraktarevic speelt met Bosnië" en meteen tegen Zwitserland, lol dat wordt spicy. Als Rodriguez en Mvogo erin staan, dan is het echt een mini PSV reünie tegen elkaar. Ik ben benieuwd wie zijn vorm pakt, want dit zijn precies de duels waar je niveau laat zien. 🔥⚽
Rodriguez als linksback bij Betis is natuurlijk prima, maar het blijft raar dat het traject na zijn huurperiode bij PSV zo rommelig liep. Dat eerste seizoen bij PSV gaf signalen, maar dat coronavirus gooide het momentum om. Toch knap dat Zwitserland hem nu weer kiest voor een WK. 💯
Bajraktarevic in dezelfde poule als Zwitserland, dat is wel peak PSV-gevoel. Denk dat hij vooral op die momenten moet durven versnellen en bal aan de zijlijn durven vragen. Als hij daar 1-2 acties durft te maken, kan hij zo groeien op zo'n toernooi. 🔥
Mvogo in de selectie bij Zwitserland snap ik eerlijk gezegd niet helemaal. Die fout tegen AZ en daarna weer terug op de bank... tbh dan moet Yakin wel echt vertrouwen op gevoel hebben. Of is Drommel ondertussen blessure-proof en Mvogo ineens weer safe? 👀
Mvogo was echt een geval van pieken en dalen, van Schmidt nog vertrouwen tot Drommel die hem wegduwt. Hopelijk leert hij daarvan en staat hij WK-waardig op doel. 💀
Eens, Zwitserland gaat het lastig krijgen in die poule. Bajraktarevic moet wel scherp zijn, Canada en Qatar zijn geen makkelijke klus. Als hij speelt, kan het een echte underdog-sleeper worden. 👀
"een plek over" voor Mvogo en Rodriguez, haha ik zie het al. Bondscoach zegt vertrouwen, maar wij weten hoe wisselvallig die AZ-game was. Toch gun ik ze WK-ervaringen, alleen geen goals tegen PSV in mijn hoofd.
Murad Yakin die 2 ex-PSV'ers meeneemt, nice. Maar Rodriguez kwam via dat Milan-verhaal toch nooit echt rond, man. Als Betis hem nu fit houdt, kan Zwitserland linksback daar echt wel een niveau hoger gaan.
Mvogo in de selectie van Zwitserland is weer zo'n PSV-verhaal van het voordeel pakken en dan toch fouten. Die AZ-wedstrijd... bruh, je voelt meteen waarom Drommel er daarna in bleef. Maar goed, Yakin gelooft erin, dus laten we hem het voordeel gunnen.
Ricardo Rodriguez weer terug tegen onze radar, man wat een verhaal. PSV probeerde hem definitief over te nemen en ja hoor, het liep net niet uit. Nu bij Betis hoop ik dat hij WK-waardig blijft, maar bij ons was hij toen toch net te vaak "bijna".
Ricardo Rodriguez terugkijken op PSV klinkt altijd als net niet. Zes duels en dan toch al de return naar Milaan, hoe frustrerend kan je het hebben als speler en club. Tbh snap ik dat Betis hem nu goed gebruikt, maar PSV had hem best kunnen doorpakken.
Nice dat Bajraktarevic nu echt op het WK-plan staat. Poule B met Canada en Zwitserland wordt sowieso pittig, maar ik ben vooral benieuwd of Esmir daar meteen impact gaat maken. Denk dat PSV hier wel trots op mag zijn. ⚽
Rodriguez en Mvogo bij Zwitserland is wel heel PSV-achtig zeg. En tbh, dat verhaal over Mvogo tegen AZ... dat blijft een pijnpunt. Zelfs als bondscoach Yakin hem selecteert, had PSV daar ooit gewoon iets meer stabiliteit willen zien.
Bajraktarevic bij Bosnië is echt lekker voor de ontwikkeling. Poule met Canada, Zwitserland en Qatar, da's meteen geen makkelijke klus. Hopelijk blijft hij bij PSV minuten pakken, want WK-stage is top maar ritme is nog belangrijker.
Bajraktarevic bij Bosnië is logisch, die jongen heeft toch altijd tempo. Hopelijk pakt hij in Poule B een paar wedstrijden, want dit is het soort podium waar je doorbreekt. ⚽
