Ruben van Bommel looks back on the injury: 'That was definitely the annoying part'

Last year, Ruben van Bommel moved from AZ to PSV for fifteen million euros, and in Eindhoven the winger managed to impress at the start of the season. However, on 21 September 2025, disaster struck in the home match against Ajax (2-2), which meant that Van Bommel was ruled out for the rest of the season.

Now the left winger with PSV is on training camp in Germany and last weekend Van Bommel made his comeback after almost ten months in the PSV kit during the friendly match against Union Saint-Gilloise (7-3). In an interview with PSV’s club channels, the winger looks back on the injury he suffered against Ajax.

''Did you also know right away: is this my cruciate ligament?'', asks presenter Maddy Janssen, after which Van Bommel responds: ''I had a very strange feeling, because at the beginning I thought: this must in principle be the cruciate ligament, because I wouldn’t know anything else that could hurt this much'', begins the wing forward.

''Only after that when the doctor came onto the field did he make a movement, and then I felt a sort of little click. And then I thought: maybe it's better now. But when I stood up I did feel that it wasn’t going to work'', continues Van Bommel.

After that, the attacker is asked how difficult it was to break the PSV story loose. ''That was indeed the annoying part, because I was doing well. I was getting fit; I played, I think, ninety minutes the same week against Union (Saint-Gilliose). The timing was dreadful—only I think for an injury like that there is never a good moment,'' said the left winger.
