Stewart speaks candidly about the transfer window: “We do a lot to prevent that.”

PSV is now on a training camp in Germany to prepare this week for the start of the 2026/2027 season. During this, the club also had to oversee how two outgoing transfers in the past few days failed to go through at the very last moment.

Unlike last summer, there is now no plan to make a documentary about the transfer window of PSV. Last year, a camera crew from PSV TV followed the club’s transfer summer closely and the documentary was titled Ever Change A Winning Team because the PSV squad would no longer be the same as in the 2024/2025 season.

Technical director Earnest Stewart is in the background clearly working on strengthening coach Peter Bosz’s squad. Last week, Stewart noticed that it was getting a bit busier at PSV, and that was also due to the aborted transfers of Armando Obispo and Adamo Nagalo.

''It is different from a summer ago. But recognizable from two summers ago, when the EURO was'', says the TD to Voetbal International.

Unlike last season, PSV now has very few players whose contracts are expiring. Last year, among others, Luuk de Jong, Olivier Boscagli, Walter Benitez and Richy Ledezma had contracts that came to an end, which meant they ultimately left on a free transfer.

''We all now have contracts that run through. That creates a different dynamic and also means that in some cases you are reactive. Who do clubs come for, and who don’t? You can then act accordingly. Strategically, it’s just slightly different. Last year we really had to fill quite a number of positions; then you can also ring the bell a bit earlier. On the one hand, that was very clear and straightforward, and on the other hand, you now have a lot of control and you can act from a position of strength,'' Stewart says about it.

During the 2024/2025 season, the American realized that sticking to the championship squad from the previous season was almost fatal and, as a result, the club management at PSV decided to refresh the squad. That belief still holds for 2026/2027 as well.

''Ever Change A Winning Team is not just about players. It’s also about always being busy with improvement, with the way we play. About being proactive as one. Look, we don’t want to keep the squad exactly as it is. We experienced that two years ago and we don’t want that to happen again. We’re doing a lot to prevent that. We always have to refresh, renew; the energy has to be there at all times. Luckily, I see that today in training, which is very nice. Up to now, things have been quite manageable in terms of busyness this summer, but I also don’t believe that nothing is going to happen. We have players who are still in demand'', according to the sporting director.
