Ruben van Bommel confirms: “If it’s any good…”
1 min readRuben van Bommel has also found out that his father, Mark, is on the verge of becoming the national team coach of Belgium. Earlier this week, rumors emerged that the former PSV captain was at the top of the list to become the successor to Rudi Garcia, and in the meantime the former footballer has reached an agreement with the KBVB, down to a number of details.
In a conversation with ESPN, Ruben is asked what he thinks about the rumors about his father Mark. In that, the winger is pretty clear.
''We talk about it, about what choices he makes as a coach. Of course he asks us what we think— that's logical, and we will certainly discuss it'', says the current PSV player
Then Ruben addresses the advice he gave to Mark. ''If he can become Belgium's national team coach, I say go for it'', the striker is pretty clear about.
After that, Van Bommel joked with the ESPN reporter. ''When will this be aired? If all goes well, it will come around. And otherwise you just have to cut it out for a moment,'' said Ruben.

"Als het goed is, komt het wel rond" 😂 Ruben die denkt aan uitzendingen i.p.v. contracten, love it. Maar serieus, Mark in België kan werken, zolang ze hem niet vastzetten op te defensief voetbal. België heeft juist dat momentum nodig.
Bruto details na akkoord, nice, maar ik wacht toch op de officiële KBVB-punten. Als Mark gaat, ben ik vooral benieuwd wie de trekker wordt bij PSV in zijn systeem. Je ziet nu al hoe veel invloed hij had op keuzes.
"We praten erover, over wat voor keuzes hij maakt als trainer." That sentence is actually telling. If Mark asks the players what they think, it means hes already thinking about the group, not just tactics on paper.
i get that Ruben is supportive, but im curious what choices Mark would make in his first squad. Belgium has a lot of talent, midfield balance is the big question, dont think itll be straightforward.
Haha die "even eruit knippen" grap 😂 Maar serieus, Mark van Bommel bondscoach lijkt me echt een logische stap, en Ruben die zegt "als het goed is, zeg ik doen" klinkt wel heel overtuigd.
"Als hij bondscoach van België kan worden, zeg ik doen" is natuurlijk meteen een stampvol groen licht van Ruben. Maar ik ben benieuwd of Mark dan ook echt zijn voetbal gaat doorzetten bij België, of dat het meer over aanpassen gaat. Denk wel dat hij rijpe spelers kan laten draaien.
Tbh snap ik zijn reactie wel. Mark van Bommel als Belgium-bondscoach lijkt me juist een slimme stap als PSV-ervaring en zijn manier van trainen intact blijven. Hopelijk helpt hij België aan meer structure achterin en tempo in balbezit.
