Van Bommel: “With him included, it’s even more fun.”

Last weekend, Ruben van Bommel made his first minutes in the PSV kit since the home match against Ajax (2-2) on 21 September 2025. On that day, Van Bommel suffered a serious knee injury that kept him on the sidelines for the rest of the season.

Since then, the winger had worked on his recovery and in the match against Union Saint-Gilloise, Van Bommel played for more than half an hour in a duel that PSV ultimately won 7-3. In an interview with the Eindhovens Dagblad, Van Bommel looked back on his first minutes.

''I’ve worked on this for a very long time. Of course it’s not an official match, but still. If you haven’t played in matches for three hundred days, then of course you miss the rhythm. Medically, I’m fit. But really match-fit? Everyone will understand that it takes a little while. I myself have been really happy that I’m a footballer again,'' says the left winger.

Van Bommel also decided himself that he did not want to come into action anymore over the past season, and in doing so the winger also missed the first two friendly matches of the new season. ''The plan from the start of my rehabilitation was that I would no longer be in action last season. I worked through almost the entire rehabilitation with Egid (Kiesouw, ed.)'', the forward continues.

Willems is very important has been during the recovery. ''During an earlier injury period I also worked with him and we know each other well. I tried the whole period to deal with the situation as sensibly as possible. Taking risks made no sense; I’m only twenty-one. My knee had to be one hundred percent right in order to be able to play again. I also spoke about it with many players who have had it'' says Van Bommel.

The attacker is also looking forward to playing again with Sven Mijnans, with whom Van Bommel also played at AZ. ''He is a very good friend of mine, and I'm happy that he's here. The team was already very good, and with Sven added it was even more fun. If you score so many goals as the number ten at AZ, there is no doubt about his qualities,'' said the attacker.
