Érick Gutiérrez is by no means giving up hope of returning to PSV.

1 min read

In 2018, Érick Gutiérrez was contracted by PSV. Despite the high expectations, the Mexican midfielder was never truly an undisputed starter, and in 2023, Gutiérrez returned to his birth country, Mexico, to go and play football for C.D. Guadalajara.

However, Guti's career has fallen into decline and, partly due to a lack of playing time, the former PSV player was also not included in the preliminary squad of the Mexican national team for the World Cup, just like Hirving Lozano. Now the midfielder has expressed the desire to return to PSV one day.

This tells Guti in conversation with the magazine ELF Voetbal. ''It seems to me fantastic to still play for PSV for a few more years. With all the experience I have now, I can mean more for the club than during my first spell'', the Mexican is candid in conversation with the football magazine.

Guti arrived at PSV from Pachuca at the age of 23, but due in part to the fierce competition in midfield, the Mexican was never an undisputed starter in his first season. ''Back then I was young and still had a lot to learn. Now I'm older and have experienced everything. But I haven't lost my hunger for success. Hopefully, in the coming years there will be an opportunity to return,'' the Mexican says about it.

Due in part to a number of injuries within the squad, Gutiérrez under coach Roger Schmidt in the 2021/2022 season was given more playing time than in all previous seasons combined. Under Schmidt, the Mexican was even deployed as a left-sided center-back against the end of the 2021/2022 season due to injuries to, among others, Olivier Boscagli and Armando Obispo.

In the KNVB Cup final of 2022, Guti played a major role in the 2-1 win over Ajax. Shortly after halftime, the midfielder headed in the 1-1, and one minute after this goal Cody Gakpo made it 2-1, with which PSV for the first time since 2012 claimed the Dutch cup title.

In 2023, Guti left for Mexico again and at this moment the midfielder is happy in his home country, despite the fact that he regularly receives messages from PSV fans or whether Guti will ever return to PSV. ''If you ask me in Eindhoven, I believe they still know me. I still have good contact with people from the club and I regularly get messages from supporters who want to see me back. I always respond with the same thing: who knows, one day. For now, my family and I are happily in Guadalajara. Beautiful things are going to happen here, with the World Cup on the way. It promises to be a great party for all football fans in Mexico,'' said Gutiérrez.

Wie kijkt mee? 😅 Also why do we leave space in behind our fullbacks so often. The moment they switched the play, it got scary.

I disagree with the 'rotation' idea. If the midfield loses their distances, our build-up turns into panic passing. Put the most stable 8 in and let the wide players do the work, then we can control the game.

"we can be better in possession" yeah fair, but the bigger issue is the final ball. Too many passes arriving late, and then we scramble for the second contact. ⚽

That chance he missed was criminal... 💀👏 Still, the press was peak and you can tell the team wants it.

I dont buy the hype around the fullback bombing forward if the winger isnt tracking back. Its exciting, but it leaves us exposed every counter.

🔥🔥🔥 If this lineup is true, i love how fast they can press after losing it. Lets see if the CBs can stay calm when the press gets broken, because the first 20 minutes will decide it.

Wie kijkt mee? 👀😂 Die opbouw zag er echt rommelig uit, maar ja, je ziet wel kansen ontstaan.

If PSV keep starting like this, then the midfield is gonna get overrun. Teze was solid but we still need more control in the half spaces.

Tbh the midfield looked a bit disconnected at times. I was hoping for more control from the 8, because every time we win it back, we still play too slowly.

That quote about being 'ruthless in the box' feels right, but we need more than one good chance. Bakayoko looked most dangerous when he ran at his man, we should build everything around that.

If PSV keep starting so high with the fullbacks, Ajax will punish them with transitions. I just hope van Nistelrooy tells the midfield to cover the half-spaces early, otherwise itll be a long night.

If PSV keep pressing like that, they can turn games into chaos for the opposition. But i need to see more of the final pass, too many attacks die at the edge of the box.
