Reactions to the “modified plans” expansion of Philips Stadium

1 min read

PSV fans seem to find something in the essentially slightly modified plans for the upcoming expansion of the Philips Stadium. Although it doesn’t appear that much genuinely concrete is changing, various PSV fans on X respond quite critically to the latest update from Eindhovens Dagblad regarding the stadium plans.

It will eventually happen, the expansion of the Philips Stadium. Even now, the club management intends to play the matches in the expanded and, by then, much larger Philips Stadium in the 2030-2031 season. The project can still be called highly ambitious.

In fact, it is the biggest change the club has ever experienced, a stadium with more than 50,000 spectators. That is why it is not strange that the plans that have been made occasionally change and/or are transformed. This also applies to the variant that was presented earlier this spring. This is reported by Eindhovens Dagblad.

'PSV appears, based on the current state of affairs, to be choosing a variant under which, in 2030, around 53,000 spectators are expected to be able to attend at the Philips Stadium. For now, only three of the four sides of the stadium will be fitted with additional seats for the public', reports the Eindhovens Dagblad.

'PSV has not yet submitted a definitive application to the municipality of Eindhoven for a permit for the expansion of its own stadium, but that is expected soon. Everything now points to the club wanting to place many thousands of additional seats via a third ring within the north, east and west sides of the stadium,' it says.

'Within the current plans, an extension with a third ring is also envisaged on the south side, but it has not yet been chosen as a capacity expansion. Possibly, additional commercial spaces will be added there, but that still needs to be determined', the analysis of the most recent plans states. The reason why PSV does not yet seem to be opting for a major scale-up on the south side of the Philips Stadium? Last year, substantial investments were already made there, and a new renovation would mean that many millions would have to be spent again, which would largely undo the previous refurbishment.

The change in the plans would have to do, according to the regional newspaper, with the fact that it is more practical to first renovate three stands so that, in the meantime, play can continue with without too much inconvenience, and then to take on the South Stand precisely after the three renovated stands. This would result in the least resistance occurring during the large-scale renovations.

Slight disappointments here and there among the PSV fans, which is certainly not necessary because in four summers there will still be a much larger Philips football temple rising in the Eindhoven city centre. The only question is whether, in the end, 53,000 spectators—or still 56,000 spectators—will be passing through the turnstiles of the Philips Stadium....Or whether those earlier-mentioned 56,000 spectators can only start taking their seats a year later in the renovated Philips Stadium. A selection of the reactions.

tbh the south side argument makes sense, last year already spent money there so another big refurb would be pain. But if they are only adding seats on north, east and west for now, will the atmosphere still feel like full capacity? 👀

Third tier on north, east, west makes sense for logistics, but the south stand always felt like the missing piece. If last years investment gets partially "undone" thats a bruh moment, spending millions twice hurts 😂

"only three of the four sides" is kinda annoying to hear. I get the practicality, but if you are going to do it, commit fully. Otherwise atmosphere might dip until the south tier is ready 🔥

53,000 by 2030 and only 3 sides first is very PSV tbh. Smart to keep games running, but i hope the south stand plan does not get delayed again...

53,000 in 2030 is honestly crazy, PSV really committing to the big stage. I like the practical logic too, renovate three sides first so the matches can keep going. If the South Stand is left for last, i just hope it doesnt slow the whole project down.
