Hugo Borst wants, alongside Ronald Koeman, to never see someone else in Oranje again, critic fears succession

1 min read

It is not hard to guess at whom the critical arrows are aimed after Ronald Koeman stepped down as head coach of the Netherlands national team. Soccer-loving Netherlands does not have such a high opinion of Nigel de Jong, the technical director of the KNVB.

If it were up to Hugo Borst, not only Ronald Koeman would leave after the disappointing World Cup at the KNVB, as he writes in Algemeen Dagblad. The journalist and columnist would also like to see Nigel de Jong sacked. And immediately. Borst then also takes a hard shot at De Jong

The Dutch national team went down after a penalty shootout in the night from Monday to Tuesday against Morocco in the round of sixteen of the World Cup, and that has therefore been what it has been all week about already because it turned out to be an absolute failure by Oranje. It also marked the end of Ronald Koeman as head coach of Oranje. Football-loving Netherlands wasted no time and criticized Ronald Koeman up to and including.

That also applies to people like Johan Derksen and Hugo Borst, who understand little to nothing of Koeman’s explanation about playing with five defenders after the match. The national coach said that he would do it exactly the same way if he got the chance to do it again. “Well, ” is Borst’s reaction to that. “Just forget it—he’s leaving anyway.”

However, Borst believes that the critical arrows should also be aimed at Nigel de Jong. “More important is that Nigel de Jong, director of top football at the KNVB, is quickly given a friendly thanks for proven incompetence. Before he puts another wrong coach in charge again,” Borst said. He points to Peter Bosz, who signed a new contract with PSV because De Jong wanted to postpone the decision about Koeman until after the World Cup. “Now Arne Slot is available, Erik ten Hag can also be taken away at FC Twente, but I fear that he will come up with Michael Reiziger.”

Yeahhh if they keep winning the second balls, this is gonna feel like peak PSV ⚽💯 But if the final pass is mid, we draw and then everyone panics lol.

Okay but how is that decision supposed to fix our set-piece defending? We conceded the same way twice. Need clear zonal discipline, not vibes. 🤬

"more direct" please. We had moments last match where the first-time ball actually cooked them. Keep that, and let the kid run at defenders. 🚀⚽

"it starts with the fullbacks" is true, but ours were a bit too casual in the last stretch. When the overlap doesnt come quickly, the whole wing play stalls. 👀

Eindhoven should be running them ragged with the width, not narrow passing lanes. If we want goals, we need earlier crosses and more movement in the box. Wingers cant stay glued to the touchline.

Promising stuff, but idk if the pressing is sustainable for 90 minutes. If we get tired, that back line will get punished fast. 💀

Solid point about the midfield balance. tbh, i think Tillman has to do more defensively if they want to control the tempo, otherwise it turns into chaos after 60 mins. 🔥

Wat ik niet snap is why the fullbacks keep stepping up when the winger has already beaten his man. Feels like free counters waiting to happen... 👀

If this lineup is real, i swear we need more control in midfield. Right now we look like we are chasing games instead of setting the tempo.

If PSV goes with that build-up again, i just hope Veerman stays brave on the ball. The moment they bypass the press too slowly, you get punished right away, every time.
