Motivation problems? | “PSV players don’t have any interest at all”
1 min readWith all that a week or six ago they won the conquered league title in the ranks, Peter Bosz's team in fact still needs to peak one more time. PSV - FC Twente looks set to be a cracker in every way.
However, in the media landscape there seems to be little confidence in the motivation of the different players in Peter Bosz’s squad. FC Twente will be heading into a crucial confrontation next weekend against PSV in the race for Champions League football, but the motivation at PSV would be hard to find. At least, that’s what Arno Vermeulen of NOS thinks, for example.
"Then it’s match point for FC Twente—only then you play the last game of the season away at the national champion who stands out by a mile", Arno Vermeulen begins in the NOS Football Podcast of the Dutch public broadcaster.
Jeroen Grueter thinks that FC Twente should go full throttle in the first few minutes. "I would, as FC Twente, really get into gear in the first ten minutes. The players from PSV just want to be able to relax on holiday. They have absolutely no desire for it."
Assistant analyst Jan Roelfs thinks that many players from Peter Bosz's squad are already keeping the World Cup in mind. "Of course that goes around in their heads. That is, by far, the best tactic", says Roelfs. Still, he has not seen PSV ease off in recent weeks. "Did you see Perišić in the last few weeks, even though it had basically already been decided? I saw a great header goal. He is not pretending that it no longer matters."
NOS colleague Jeroen Grueter believes that PSV this coming weekend against FC Twente may be a different story. "Such a last match is different, with a World Cup coming up. If you want to go on vacation for a bit, then you don't feel like doing it with a swollen ankle."

Grueter is right that last games feel different, but PSV having to play with an eye on bigger moments is not the same as "no motivation". I just hope they manage the first phase well, because Twente can punish early if PSV fall asleep.
Grueter's point about "a thick ankle" tbh is the most realistic part: players adjust when there is a close season vibe. But PSV at PSV Stadium is never just a warm-up for Twente. We can win this, and Twente knows it. 🔥
Wie zegt dat PSV geen zin heeft, heeft Perisic dus gemist. Als die laatste wedstrijd echt "anders" wordt, dan denk ik dat PSV juist de juiste focus pakt om problemen voor Twente te maken. W, PSV gewoon gas erop en klaar. 💯
Jan Roelfs zegt "Dat is wel de beste tactiek" met het WK in het achterhoofd, maar ik vind het risico te makkelijk gebracht. Perisic is niet alleen een kopgoal man, hij dwingt ook ruimte af in de opbouw. Als PSV tegen Twente compact blijft, is "vakantie" geen excuus, dan is het gewoon kwaliteit. 100%.
Roelfs calling "WK in the head" as the best tactic for Twente sounds convenient. Still, I get it: PSV might manage minutes and avoid risks, but that does not mean "no zin".💯
Honestly, als Twente vroeg druk zet en PSV niet vroeg wint op duels, dan wordt het echt spannend. Maar die zin over "geen dikke enkel" voelt gewoon als motivatiepraat. Ik denk dat PSV juist extra scherp start omdat ze niet willen dat Twente aan die derde plek ruikt. 💀
Twente op matchpoint en meteen in de eerste tien minuten inkleunen... dat is mooi, maar het kan ook een open uitnodiging zijn. Als PSV dat tempo overleeft, krijg je kansen op de counter. 👀
Ik geloof het verhaal van Roelfs met het WK wel een beetje, maar ik zie juist discipline omhoog blijven. Als Perisic fit is dan is hij nog steeds onmisbaar, ook als de wereld draait om iets anders. Dat kopdoelpunt is echt niet alsof het "al gespeeld" was.

Wie denkt dat Twente matchpoint meteen druk moet zetten, heeft misschien gelijk. Maar als PSV rustig overleeft die eerste tien minuten, Twente gaat open.
Roelfs zegt dat de WK-gedachten rondspoken in hun hoofden, maar ik zie geen ingekakte ploeg. Als we tegen Twente niet gas teruggeven, dan komt het vooral doordat we spelers hebben die willen winnen, niet omdat het "wel gespeeld" lijkt. Toch zou ik die laatste wedstrijd mentaal juist extra scherp vinden, niet slordig.
"De spelers van PSV willen gewoon lekker op vakantie." lol ja zeker, daarom stonden ze de laatste weken wel te prikken met kansen. Als Twente denkt dat ze er makkelijk overheen gaan, dan gaan ze dat na 20 minuten wel voelen. 🔥

Arno zegt dat PSV "geen zin" heeft en tbh ik snap de paranoia, maar ik denk niet dat Perisic ineens licht gelooft in z'n eigen vakantieplannen. Als PSV snijdt, pakken ze het gewoon. Twente moet oppassen voor die ene versnelling.

Tbh ik snap wel waarom Grueter denkt dat PSV het zat kan zijn, maar PSV is juist de laatste weken behoorlijk fel gebleven. Als Perisic nog zo doorgaat, dan is "geen zin" gewoon kul. 👀
The "PSV have no interest" line is such Ajax-level nonsense 😅. If anything, this is the type of match where PSV players want to send a statement in the final stretch.
Perisic not going through the motions is the proof. That header goal tells me PSV arent saving energy for a reason, they still want wins and points.

If Twente come out flying in the first 10 minutes, thats exactly where PSV must stay calm. The "no interest, vacation mode" take feels a bit cap tbh, because PSV have been sharp lately.
