Mark van Bommel is thinking of his old club and is open to a new job.
1 min readMark van Bommel's adventure as coach of PSV went differently than planned. Despite a strong first season, no trophy was won, and midway through the second season, the former captain was sent packing for the holidays due to disappointing performances in Europe and in the league.
After his adventure at PSV, Van Bommel ended up at VfL Wolfsburg in the summer of 2021. At that club too, the born Maassbrachter had a good start, but after a run of poor results, the PSV club icon was already sacked in October 2021.
In the summer of 2022, Van Bommel was appointed head coach of Royal Antwerp FC and the PSV icon led the team from Antwerp in 2023 to their first national title in a long time. Antwerp also secured the Belgian Cup with Van Bommel at the helm.
Now the situation at the club from the port city of Belgium is a lot less, and that hurts Van Bommel a lot. ''Of course it hurts me to see Antwerp sliding downhill. The return of Tribune 2 is a boost. It's a shame that I didn't experience that'', the former midfielder tells Het Laatste Nieuws in an interview.
Since the summer of 2024, Van Bommel has been without a club, and the native Limburger is open to a new challenge. ''I’ve been out of it for two seasons now, but I could have started somewhere earlier. However, I chose to be there for my son (Ruben, ed.), who suffered a severe ACL injury. Now I’d like to start again. Clubs can always call me,'' concludes the former captain of PSV.

Lol hij zegt "Clubs mogen mij altijd bellen" maar ik snap ook dat hij eerst bij zijn zoon wilde zijn. ❤️💯 Mark had altijd een duidelijke lijn, maar ik ben benieuwd of hij bij een nieuwe klus ook anders gaat gokken in Europa. PSV heeft nog steeds dat Van Bommel-gevoel in de herinnering.
Die zin over Tribune 2 en dat hij het niet meegemaakt heeft, gaat hard... 👀 Toch blijft de vraag: was hij als trainer te hard op resultaat ingesteld en te weinig flexibel? Ik geef hem credit voor Antwerp in 2023, maar PSV had wel moeten pakken.

tbh vind ik het vooral jammer dat hij bij PSV niet die prijzen pakte na een sterk eerste seizoen. Bij Europa en competitie ging het mis, en dan ben je ineens weg. Maar dat Antwerp met hem wél landstitel en beker deed, zegt genoeg over zijn impact.
"Het doet mij natuurlijk pijn om Antwerp te zien afglijden" is precies zo'n Van Bommel-reactie, echt clubhart. Maar als PSV-fan denk ik ook: had hij bij ons in Europa gewoon wat meer moeten roteren. Dat ontslag in december blijft pijnlijk om terug te lezen.
Man, dat van Bommel met Antwerp doet echt pijn om te zien. Je voelt die pijn in zijn reactie, "Tribune 2" erbij is wel een opsteker, maar als resultaten afglijden is het zuur. Hopelijk krijgt hij snel weer een project waar hij kan bouwen.
Tbh het voelt echt wrang dat Mark zo'n seizoen niet af kon maken met PSV. Maar eerlijk, zijn band met Antwerp maakt ook wel begrijpelijk waarom dit pijn doet. Hopelijk krijgt hij snel een nieuwe club, want die typische mentaliteit mist niemand.
