Mario Been looks back on a historic defeat against PSV and still feels a sense of satisfaction.

On 24 October 2010, PSV managed to beat Feyenoord 10-0 at home. At the Rotterdammers, Mario Been was head coach at the time, and for Been this is still one of the toughest days of his life.

This tells the current analyst in the podcast The Struggle is Real. ''That is a day I would like to forget from my life'', says the former coach of the team from Rotterdam-Zuid.

''We did very well for twenty minutes, but then Kelvin Leerdam received a red card. Then we had to carry on with ten men. It was 2-0 at halftime, and I still remember that in the break I said that we had to try to stay in the game as long as possible. See if we could make a goal to get back into it,'' Been still recalls.

But the opposite happened just then. PSV came out of the starting blocks in the second half and in the 59th minute it was 6-0.

That could also be seen by Been from the couch. ''But every shot by PSV went in. It was a debacle. Everything went wrong; the boys lost their composure. Bruno Martins Indi was still going forward with 7-0. It was no longer coachable. And it turned into an embarrassment. That has affected me a lot, and it also made me doubt myself enormously. But as the one ultimately responsible, you still have to stand up for it,'' the current analyst says.

Even the days after that, the historic defeat still had an impact. ''It wasn’t easy and I didn’t want to face anyone in those days either. I didn’t show up anywhere and was only focused on leading the next matches as well as possible. I still remember that I wanted to do the post-match analysis, because you’re a beginner coach. Then the players said: 'Coach, we already know that now.' They didn’t even want to see the footage anymore'', Been recalls.

In game 32, PSV went to De Kuip as league leaders and lost, partly due to an unjust red card for Orlando Engelaar, 3-1, which meant that Fred Rutten’s team ultimately did not become champions by the end of the season. ''The only bright spot that year was that we kept PSV from the title by beating them 3-1 at home. I only ever mentioned that match talk in connection with the game in Eindhoven. We beat PSV and that cost them the championship. That was the only satisfaction. For the rest, I was extremely ashamed, and I still am,'' concludes the former coach.
