Kovar crashes to defeat against Czechia in their first group match
1 min readLast night, PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar played the first World Cup match for the Czech Republic since the 2006 World Cup. The PSV player, along with his team, took on South Korea in Group A.
The match in Mexican Guadalajara was, especially in the first half, not the most high-quality match. Kovar only had to make an easy save and for the rest both teams created very few chances.
When both teams went into halftime at 0-0, even boos echoed from the stands. In the second half the match really broke loose and Kovar was able to stand out.
That way, the PSV goalkeeper prevented the 1-0 from the South Korean star player Heung-Min Son five minutes after the goalkeeper had also already made two saves on a shot from Feyenoorder In-Beom Hwang and in the rebound from Jae-Sung Lee. Despite the threat from South Korea, it was Czechia that, contrary to all expectations, managed to produce the opening goal.
In the 59th minute, captain Ladislav Krejci headed in to make it 0-1 after a long throw-in by Vladimir Coufal. At that point, it was also the team’s first shot on goal, with Kovar in goal.
In the 67th minute, South Korea, via Feyenoorder Hwang, got what it was entitled to and the midfielder managed to ensure the 1-1. After a Czech goal was disallowed for offside, the South Koreans struck in minute 80 through substitute Hyeon-Gyu Oh, allowing the Asian country to take full points and leaving the Czechs empty-handed.

Idk, Kovar had z'n moment, maar het wedstrijdverloop was cap. Ze hielden het lang dicht, dan 0-1, daarna 1-1, en voor je het weet ben je de sjaak. Voor PSV is het wel een goed teken dat hij onder druk alsnog onderscheiden kan worden. goated
"makkelijke redding" in de eerste helft klopt niet echt met hoe fans dit gaan onthouden. De echte shift kwam bij Son, maar daarna krijg je 1-1 en vlak voor tijd de klap. Krejci kopbal was peak, daarna was het gewoon te kwetsbaar in omschakeling. 🔥👀
ngl, die eerste helft klonk echt slaapverwekkend, maar Kovar maakte zichzelf meteen belangrijk. Toch pijnlijk dat Tsjechie na die 0-1 precies dezelfde wedstrijd als Zuid-Korea ging spelen.
Die 59e minuut van Krejci uit de verre inworp, dat hoofdwerk was lekker. Maar ik snap die positie bij Oh niet, zo vlak voor tijd... dan ben je ineens het ritme kwijt. 💀
"De PSV'er nam het met zijn ploeg op tegen Zuid-Korea" prima, maar ik zag vooral hoe dun de kansen waren in de eerste helft. 0-0 en boegeroep zegt genoeg. Kovar redt het een beetje in de tweede helft, maar de verdediging betaalt uiteindelijk de prijs bij die late 1-2. 👀
tbh jammer dat Tsjechië pas met de eerste echte goal kwam, volgens mij maar 1 doelpoging tot die treffer. Als je dan 1-0 maakt, maar daarna meteen laat terugkomen via Hwang, dan voelt het net wat slordig. 🤦♂️
Kovar was dus de enige reden dat het geen vroeg drama werd lol. 0-0 rust en dan toch die momenten met Son, knap hoor. Maar als Tsjechie zo'n openingstreffer uit de eerste poging maakt en daarna wegloopt... tja.
Matej Kovar na die 0-0 rust, van dat gejoel naar die reddingen... dat is echt clutch. Son had er al bijna eentje en dan pakt hij toch doorpakken. ❤️🔥
