Huub Stevens looks back: “That still lives in our hearts”

Bundesliga, FC Schalke 04 became champions this season in the second-highest league in Germany and, as a result, the team from Gelsenkirchen will return to the Bundesliga again next season. On 19 May 2001, exactly 25 years ago last Tuesday, the situation at Die Königsblauen was still completely different.
Back then, the squad from the Ruhr region was, in fact, in second place ahead of the final league match, trailing FC Bayern Munich by three points, but with a better goal difference than Der Rekordmeister. In Gelsenkirchen, former PSV player and coach Huub Stevens was, at the time, on the touchline at the then Parkstadion.
FC Schalke 04 played their last league match at home against SpVgg Unterhaching with 5-3 and this was also the last match in the Parkstadion since the club from the 2001/2002 season onwards moved to the new Veltins-Arena, which until 2005 was known as Arena AufSchalke. Die Königsblauen did their job and won the last match 5-3, which meant that Stevens’ team depended on the result of the match HSV - FC Bayern München.
In the 90th minute, the home team went 1-0 up via a header by Sergej Barbarez, and as a result the championship seemed to be heading to Gelsenkirchen rather than to Munich. After the final whistle in Gelsenkirchen, FC Schalke supporters rushed onto the pitch in the belief that HSV had won 1-0, which meant that their team had unexpectedly become national champions.
But nothing was less true since the match in Hamburg was still in progress and was broadcast via a live connection on the large screens of the Parkstadion. There the fans saw that FC Bayern in the 94th minute still got a final chance at the national championship from an indirect free kick in the HSV penalty area.
In the end, it was Swedish Patrik Andersson who, with the last opportunity, shot the ball against the ropes, which meant that FC Bayern were champions after all, and it plunged the supporters of Schalke 04 into mourning. Even today, this day is still etched in Huub Stevens’s memory.
Stevens won the DFB-Pokal twice with FC Schalke 04 and the UEFA Cup once, which is why the former PSV player is regarded by supporters as a club icon. But still, the missed national championship in 2001 hurts him a lot.

One week after narrowly missing the national title, the team from Gelsenkirchen did, however, win the DFB-Pokal. Thanks in part to these successes, the native-born Limburger was chosen by FC Schalke supporters as coach of the century.

Kijk, Stevens is natuurlijk PSV-linked, maar dit verhaal laat ook zien waarom Schalke hem als clubicoon ziet. Wel zuur dat hij met "clubicoon" status toch dat landstitel-moment nog steeds pijn doet, dat zegt genoeg.
5-3 thuis tegen Unterhaching en toch alles afhangen van HSV-Bayern... dat is echt peak drama. 4 minuten titelgevoel en dan Andersson die het pakt, ff collectief ff 💀.
Stevens als coach zegt precies waarom fans zo verbonden raken met zulke momenten. DFB-Pokal en UEFA Cup zijn top, maar die gemiste titel in 2001 is pure litteken-geschiedenis. 4 minuten is genoeg voor eeuwige pijn. 🔥
tbh het is wrang dat ze de DFB-Pokal een week later wel pakken, maar de landstitel blijft de hoofdprijs. Je wint wel iets, maar je krijgt dat ene gevoel niet terug. 💀
No cap, vier minuten kampioen... dat is echt een eeuwige kater 😂. En toch wint Schalke daarna meteen de DFB-Pokal, maar je hoofd blijft bij die verloren titel, ik kan me die Stevens frustratie helemaal voorstellen.
"Dat was zó bijzonder, dat vergeet je nooit meer" is pure Stevens. Maar als je het van PSV kant bekijkt, dan voelt het toch alsof hij ons soortgelijke drama ook had kunnen kennen. Wat een dag zeg. 💀
Als je in de 90e scoort en dan in 94e nog afgestraft wordt, dan snap je wel waarom het "nog altijd in ons hart" zit. tbh ik vind het bijna oneerlijk hoe zo'n seizoen kan kantelen door één spelmoment en een indirecte vrije trap.
"We waren ooit vier minuten kampioen." ehm ja je voelt het gelijk. Zelf vind ik vooral dat Schalke toen net pech had, maar ook Bayern killers mentality had in die 94e minuut.

Die Barbarez-kop en daarna nog wachten op Hamburg... brutal. Ik kan me voorstellen dat Stevens dat nooit meer loslaat, prijzen zijn mooi maar zo'n net-niet sloopt.
Volgens mij zit het verschil hier ook in het mentale stukje. Bayern vond net die laatste kans, Schalke niet, en dan gaat alles kapot in één fase. Al won je daarna de DFB-Pokal, het gevoel blijft dus alsnog "ja maar..."
4 minuten kampioen, daarna alsnog Bayern title. Dit is waarom voetbal pijn doet, maar ook waarom die verhalen blijven hangen in het hart. 🔥👀
Ik snap die pijn bij Stevens wel, maar ik vind ook dat het altijd meeweegt hoe Bayern het doelsaldo en die laatste prik nog geregeld kreeg. Bij ons zie je dit ook, één detail en je seizoen kantelt.
Schalke dat Parkstadion moment, Barbarez 1-0, iedereen springt het veld op... en dan die indirecte vrije trap. Ik zou gek worden als fan, echt. 🤬
Man, Barbarez voor 1-0 en dan alsnog Andersson die Bayern door de mazen schiet. Tbh dat is echt de definitie van voetbal-psychologie, je loopt letterlijk 1 minuut te vroeg de titel in.
Huub die dit nog zo voelt, respect. Maar wel zuur dat die kleine momenten van Schalke zo kantelen terwijl Bayern top blijft doorvoetballen. Ik krijg er meteen van die PSV-Stevens vibes bij.
