Former PSV player looks back on Oranje debut: “I wasn’t allowed to be late”
1 min readAs a footballer for PSV, Denzel Dumfries made his debut for the Netherlands national team in 2018. At that time, Dumfries had only been active in Eindhoven for a few months since PSV had signed him that summer from sc Heerenveen.
The right-back made his debut in the Nations League match against Germany (3-0) under the current national team coach Ronald Koeman and, despite some early doubts, the former PSV player is almost impossible to imagine on the right wing in Oranje. In an interview with ESPN, the wing defender looks back on his first call-up to the national team.
''The first time I was, I think, already two hours beforehand around Zeist with my best friends. Were we in the car waiting, because I wasn’t allowed to be late. We were parked somewhere, in Zeist, waiting in the car. Because yes, you can’t come too early either. That really showed how special I thought it was and how nervous I was'', Dumfries tells the sports broadcaster with a laugh.
Although Dumfries is a late bloomer, the right back was always convinced that he would make it into the Netherlands national team. ''Yes, certainly. It was just obvious: I'm going to make the Netherlands national team,'' said the defender.
Dumfries was 22 years old when, in 2018, he was allowed to start getting ready for his debut in the big Oranje. ''That was great, of course. I was in Jong Oranje and in the Under 20. I came quite late in the KNVB cycle, you could say. That meant I didn't know many of the boys. As a result, it was a whole new experience, very exciting,'' said the former PSV player.

Netjes verhaal van Denzel, maar ik denk dat zijn zelfvertrouwen al van PSV kwam. "Dat was gewoon duidelijk: ik ga het Nederlands elftal halen"... dat is echt key. 🔥🔥
Koeman's Nations League debuut tegen Duitsland (3-0) en meteen vertrouwen. Alleen jammer dat PSV hem toen al zo vroeg had afgetikt van Heerenveen, want rechtsback kwaliteit als Dumfries is gewoon geld waard 🐐
"Ik mocht niet te laat komen" lol, echt typisch Denzel mentaliteit. En Koeman die hem er meteen inzet tegen Duitsland 3-0, dat vertrouwen zie je nu nog terug in zijn durf. Wel jammer dat PSV hem zo snel kwijt was, maar hij heeft het daarna echt afgemaakt.
"Ik mocht niet te laat komen" lol, ik zie het helemaal voor me in Zeist met die auto. Tbh die leeftijdsroute via Jong Oranje en U20 legt wel uit waarom hij zo onrustig en toch gretig binnenkwam.
Die regel van "niet te laat komen" is zo typisch, maar je voelt wel dat het zijn zenuwen meteen brak. Dumfries werd echt vanaf die eerste oproep een Oranje-basis, wel verdiend hoor 🔥
Die twijfel vooraf snap ik wel, maar Koeman zette hem gewoon neer en daarna bleef het rollen. Wel grappig dat hij pas 22 was, ik had het gevoel dat hij al veel eerder klaar was. In Oranje stond hij ook echt op, niet bang.
"Ik mocht niet te laat komen" is zo herkenbaar bij eerste oproepen. Tbh Dumfries laatbloeier of niet, hij had al die PSV-mentaliteit om door te pakken. Die 3-0 tegen Duitsland maakte het meteen volwassen, ook al was hij nog zenuwachtig.

Brilliant detail over Zeist, die balans tussen niet te vroeg en vooral niet te laat, tbh dat typeert Oranje-momenten. Dumfries die toen al zo nerveus was past wel bij hoe snel hij later definitief vast zat rechts. ❤️⚽
