Former Orange player feels pessimistic: “Guus Til won’t get much playing time”
1 min readGuus Til is the only PSV player called up by national team coach Ronald Koeman for the 2026 World Cup with the Netherlands national team. Til had a strong season at PSV in which the midfielder made a name for himself primarily as an opportunistic striker.
So Til scored fourteen goals in 29 competitive matches and also provided five assists. Because of this, the debate in the country arose about whether Til should be considered for the World Cup.
Ultimately Koeman decided to call on the PSV player, and for Til this is his first call-up for Oranje since October 2024. According to former Oranje international Ronald de Boer, who was active for the Netherlands at the 1994 World Cup and the 1998 World Cup, however, the midfielder will not be making many minutes in North America.
This lets De Boer know in the morning show of Radio 538. ''You already know now that a number of players are not going to play at all. That’s always the case. Unless suddenly five players drop out. Guus Til won’t play much. I don’t think De Roon will either. Frenkie is completely fit and he has plenty of other guys for that position. So I don’t expect it. But I do like De Roon a lot,'' says the former footballer to the radio station.
De Boer also gives his opinion about not selecting AZ player Kees Smit. ''The only thing I find disappointing is that, for example, Kees Smit doesn’t go along. He then plays with the best players in the Netherlands. Then he thinks: this is the level I need to match, or they aren’t all that good after all. It’s Koeman’s choice. He will probably stop with it after this. It’s his tournament, not Kees Smit’s tournament. But I do think it’s really a shame'', said the former Ajax player.

"Guus Til zal niet veel spelen" zegt De Boer, maar tbh die man scoorde gewoon 14 keer in 29. Als Oranje vastloopt in de opbouw, dan is Til toch precies zo'n speler die je erin zet voor kansen in de halfspace. Het voelt een beetje als cap. 🔥
"Guus Til zal niet veel spelen" ... yeah maybe, but i still think Til is exactly the kind of guy who can change games late. 29 matches, 14 goals, 5 assists, that is not "bench filler" numbers. Let him get 20-25 minutes and stop acting like he is only emergency depth 🔥
Eens. Als je Koeman ziet, kiest hij meestal voor "zekerheden" op het midden. Til gaat nog meer op meters moeten maken dan in de competitie... 🔥👀
De Boer heeft wel gelijk denk ik. Koeman gaat niet ineens zijn middenveld omgooien en Til past vooral als plan B, niet als vaste starter. Jammer, want z'n rendement bij PSV was echt hoog.
Koeman picks Til, De Roon too maybe, but then minutes are the real issue. I get Frenkie is fit, but Til earned this role. If he doesnt start, at least sub him in when the game opens, he is dangerous in transition 👀
Ik snap de kritiek wel. Als je Til kiest als enige PSV'er, dan is het vreemd om vooraf al te roepen dat hij minuten gaat missen. Aan de andere kant, De Roon en Frenkie zijn blijkbaar prioriteit, dus Til wordt snel een 'plan B'.
I hate this take a bit. Til did it all season for us, even as an opportunity striker. If he cannot get minutes now, when can he? Surely he can press and arrive in the box. 👀
"Guus Til zal niet veel spelen." tbh that sounds like a setup for a late sub, but Oranje needs goals from midfield. If Koeman keeps trusting Frenkie and De Roon, Til might get scraps.
If De Boer is right, Til is basically a "set-piece or cameo" guy. Still, 14 goals and 5 assists for a midfielder/false 9 is crazy, so i get why Koeman called him up.
If Til is picked as an "opportunity striker" type then fair enough, but De Boer saying he will not play is kinda rough 😬. 14 goals and 5 assists and then you barely get minutes, that makes no sense tbh.
Man man, Koeman pakt Til wel op voor het WK en dan zegt De Boer meteen dat hij niet veel gaat spelen... bruh. Toch zijn 14 goals en 5 assists als gelegenheidsspits wel serieus, daar moet je toch minuten voor krijgen? ⚽
Guus Til als gelegenheidsspits is prima, maar dit soort WK-oproepen voelt toch als bankvulling. 14 goals en 5 assists bij PSV en dan toch "zal niet veel spelen"... zuur.
