1 min readValentijn Driessen also saw that the Netherlands national team lost 0-1 on Wednesday evening in De Kuip to Algeria and therefore traveled to the World Cup in North America with a defeat. Despite a plethora of chances in the first half, Ronald Koeman’s team failed to score.
According to Driessen, former PSV player Donyell Malen also couldn’t cope with the pressure. Malen was allowed to start from the beginning and was given a number of huge chances that the current striker of AS Roma couldn’t convert.
''He just didn’t deliver it, I think. Then he should have made three, surely given the chances he got,'' says the journalist in the podcast Kick-Off of De Telegraaf.
Driessen also thinks this has to do with the pressure that the shirt of the Dutch national team brings with it. ''I’m convinced of that. That pressure is just completely different with the Netherlands national team. Bert van Marwijk said the same thing. Coming on as a substitute with Oranje is very different from starting with Ajax. That’s just how it is,'' he continues.
Despite the fact that the journalist was not impressed by Malen, he does expect a starting spot against Japan. ''Memphis is his competition, but he really isn't fit. He's so far behind, that was evident against Algeria. Malen will start, but the Netherlands shirt weighs the most of them all'', Driessen said.
Mike Verweij believes that Malen’s performance was simply unfortunate. ''He has very good statistics in Orange... It can just be a time when it goes against him. Now he is starting in the starting lineup, that will be different. But he does come into the right positions three times. That is also a quality,'' concludes Verweij.

Koop-van-werkelijkheid for me: Netherlands created chances, but the match showed the striker cost. Driessen saying Malen cant handle it is harsh, yet i agree he has to punish Japan's moments. 👀
The way Driessen talks about the Oranje pressure is spot on imo. In PSV we can hide mistakes a bit, but with that shirt its expected goals every time you get a big chance. 🔥
Verweij zegt dat hij "drie keer in de goede positie" kwam, dat klopt volgens mij. Dus imo is het meer afwerking en timing dan meteen mentaliteit. Toch begrijp ik Driessen wel, want met kansen zoals die je krijgt moet je op z'n minst eentje pakken.
Ik ben het met Driessen eens over de basis tegen Japan. Memphis is nog niet fit, dus Malen krijgt de start en dit soort wedstrijden vraagt om iemand die direct in de box staat. Zet hem er gewoon met die druk, gooi hem niet opnieuw op random fases.
tbh Verweij heeft gelijk: hij komt wél 3 keer in de goede positie, dat is kwaliteit. Maar met finishing moet hij wss echt beter, anders is het weer dezelfde discussie, lol. 👀
"Hij heeft het gewoon niet waargemaakt" vind ik wel hard, want hij was wel degelijk gevaarlijk. Wel denk ik dat PSV-mensen hem kennen als iemand die momenten afstraft, en nu stokt het net. Japan wordt interessant, ik hoop dat hij raak schiet.
"Die druk is gewoon heel anders bij het Nederlands elftal" ja oké, maar PSV heeft hem ook geleerd om momenten te pakken. Ik vind het gevaarlijk om dat als excuus te gebruiken.
i feel the pressure talk, maar imo moet je als spits kansen pakken. Tegen Japan zal Malen wel starten, maar als Memphis nog niet fit is dan is het ook een mooie kans om zich te bewijzen.
Driessen zegt gewoon waar het op slaat: Malen kreeg kansen en maakte ze niet af. Als je er "drie moeten maken" kan, dan is het gewoon pech en ook niet scherp genoeg.
Malen starting and then not finishing feels familiar tbh. If Memphis isnt fit, Koeman has to trust Malen anyway, but i hope he starts with urgency and not just to run around.
Maar laten we eerlijk zijn, druk op zo'n shirt kan alles verstoren. Als je eerste helft al speelt met dat gewicht en je mist net die kleine details, voelt elke volgende kans meteen "moet het dan nu wel".
